I served in the Mexico City Chapultepec stake and though it's been quite some time, I'm a bit skeptical of a split. The problem with most of Mexico City except for a select free, branches are considered "wards" there. I often wondered if it was prob due to motivate the ward and get work going, but too often then most it did way more harm then good. Ward location there is tricky just like some other stakes around there due to the rolling hills giving limited travel excess pushing everyone together.

At times in my two years in the mission , that stake would baptize sometimes over 100, but due to bad baptisms and problems in leadership, there was no real ward growth.

There are a couple strong wards in the stake when I was there that had some decent leadership, and includes a ward where the mission president attended, unless things have changed, but the Observatorio ward where I served for example had like 40 people showing up, and after a very lazy, bad bishop was released, him and everyone related to him got offended and left the ward two weeks after I had gotten there- we had around 30, and leadership was so bad they called a new bishop before I left from another ward. Interestingly enough, this ward was such in bad shape I never met the 2nd counselor in the bishopric until my last Sunday or so there, the young woman's president and some other leadership position I never met as well due to them even being inactive, lol. I was only there for two changes and we had baptized over 20 people, most who have now moved.

I thought that the maximum number of units allowed in a Stake was 12. Is that incorrect?

Of the 3,162 stakes currently, there are 114 with 13 or more units. Sixty stakes have a total of 13 units; 26 stakes have 14 units; 21 stakes have 15 units; 5 stakes have 16 units; and two stakes have 17 units.

The max number of wards in any given stake currently is 15. Only one stake (Wasilla Alaska) has 15 wards. Two stakes have 14 wards each. Eleven stakes have 13 wards each.

Generally, when a stake has more than 12 wards, or even less, it is a prime candidate for splitting, if it meets all the other requirements to do so.

The San Cristobal Stake was divided into two districts: The San Cristobal District and the Comitan District.

Having served in that mission 10 years ago, I can tell you that it is quite unwieldy to have a stake cover so much territory with so few resources for one person to travel adequately. It was a stake that was five hours across driving. Given that there are not sufficient wards in San Cristobal Chiapas it was downgraded into a district.

Ocosingo plus the three SC branches: SC district.

2 Comitan Branches plus San Jose and Comalapa: Comitan district.

New ward in Cody wy the Cody 4th ward.
I was a missionary in Cody 1st ward this time last year, and we had 4 family's that we was teaching and the 3rd ward was having a lot of move ins.

I was in a ward in Las Vegas that when it had formed had attendance under 40, maybe even under 30. By the time I was there a combination of reactivation, new members moving in and baptisms of people who stayed active had propelled attendance to well over 100.

John Pack Lambert said...

I am pretty sure there is no maximum number of units allowed for a stake. At one point in the mid 1990s my stake had 9 branches and 8 wards for a total of 17 units. They called 5 alternate members of the high council.

David Todd said...

My stake had 13+ units for several years, they were all the way to 15 before they split it last year. They now have 10 and 8 wards each, so who knows if another split will happen in the next several years.

Michael Worley said...

Early reports indicate there are two new stakes in Lagos Nigeria today--a split from three stakes into five.

While LDS maps still has Saratov as a district, four of its units are now listed as wards.

LDS maps as of this post:

Volzhski Ward
Dachny Ward
Zavodskoy Ward

On LDSChurchTemples.org:

Engels Branch
Marks Branch

David Todd, which stake are you in?

Right now the Manhattan stake has 13 wards and 2 branches, so 15 units.

My ward had 5 convert baptisms this month. That is the most in one month I can remember.

David Todd said...

The Colleyville, Texas Stake is my home stake, though I am currently a student at BYU.

Curtesy of Ray, here are the September and October Year-to-date Church unit growth totals:

Sep +57 W&B; +33W, +24B, +7 stakes.
Oct +50 W&B; +35W, +15B, +5 stakes.

YTD thru Oct was +349 W&B; +340W, +9B, +42 stakes, -6 districts.
US YTD thru Oct was +105 W&B; +118W, -13B, +12 stakes, -1 district.
Outside US YTD was +244 W&B; +222W, +22B, +30 stakes, -5 districts.

These numbers include the net change in units. Overall, we have witnessed some robust growth these past two months.

Awa-lds.blogspot.com Facebook page says that the 5 stakes in Lagos, Nigeria are now: Lagos Agege Stake, Lagos Egbeda Stake, Lagos Festac Stake, Lagos Ikeja Stake, and Lagos Yaba Stake.

Any word yet on which branches in Bengaluru are now wards? One source I found just mentioned that 5 of the 6 are now wards.

Mike Johnson said...

My guess on the Bengaluru India Stake units that became wards are the five in Bengaluru:

Convent Road Branch
Indiranagar Branch
Lingarajapuram Branch
Ramamurthy Nagar Branch
Whitefield Road Branch

which are very close together and two branches share a building. My guess is there congregations are not small.

Kolar Gold Fields Branch, which is some distance to the east, is likely the branch.

LDS Maps has it as a stake, but all units (which I copied from LDS Maps) are still listed as branches.

I believe that the Virginia stakes of Ashburn and Fredericksburg both should split and encourage more growth and leadership; half of either one is probably more robust than most stakes worldwide.

Looks like there is a new stake in Florida in Vero Beach, most likely will take wards from Stuart and Cocoa. LDSChurchTemples.com only shows 1 ward for the stake so far.

TempleRick said...

The Vero Beach Florida Stake has been removed from CDOL. My guess is that an application for this stake has been submitted (and perhaps approved), but it was entered prematurely into CDOL. I'm sure we can look forward to seeing this stake organized in the near future.

It was announced on Sunday by a letter from the stake presidency that a new stake will be created in the Las Vegas, Nevada northwest area of the valley by taking wards from the Elkhorn Springs stake and the Lone Mountain stake. It is suppose to be created on December 6, 2015.

New Western Hills Ward in Rio Rancho

James Anderson said...

That Vegas stake appears to be a west/north side one, Lone Mountain is so called on account of it being separated from the westside mountains, they are threading a freeway right now between that and the western mountains. The area is fast-growing on account of the new freeway, which should be fully complete around the west side in a few years, only thing not under construction is for the most part a couple miles west of I-15 and the new interchange itself.

Given that, we are likely to see in a few years more stakes in the northwest corner of the Vegas Valley. And probably a loss or two in the city center area and south of it. Most are trying to move to the east or west, primarily Henderson or the northwest area.

I don't see Verona Italy Stake dividing any time soon, unless some of its branches (or those of the Venice stake) grow into wards. The two Milan stakes aren't that big, Florence stake has only five wards, and I can't find a good way to organize Verona and Venice stakes into three stakes.

TempleRick said...

I could see a Bergamo Italy Stake being created. The wards could be reorganized like this:

MILAN ITALY WEST STAKE (5 wards, 1 branch)
Busto Arsizio Ward
Como 1st Ward
Como 2nd Ward
Lampugnano Ward
Lugano Ward
Varese Branch

MILAN ITALY EAST STAKE (5 wards, 1 branch)

Lodi Ward
Muggio Ward
Navigli Ward
Pavia Ward

BERGAMO ITALY STAKE (5 wards, 2 branches)
Bergamo 1st Ward

VERONA ITALY STAKE (6 wards, 2 branches)

A new stake in Las Vegas so soon after the new stake in Henderson is very encouraging. Still, what I would really like to see is the reinvigoration of the Church in the Las Vegas stake, the Las Vegas Paradise Stake, the west part of the Las Vegas east stake and the south part of the Las Vegas North Stake.

John Pack Lambert said...

Growth in central Las Vegas will require much better convert retention, and better out reach to African Americans. There are the people there for the Church to grow, there just needs to be a willingness to make it happen. I have to wonder if it might be time to create some branches there to jump start growth. The Las Vegas East stake used to have two wards in its west end in the center of the city 15 years ago but has since elimanated them and now the area is covered by wards based significantly further west.

Mike Johnson said...

The problem with central Las Vegas is that people continue to move out to the suburbs in all directions and there still remain 10s of thousands of empty homes on the market.
