New Temple Predictions - February 2023 Edition

I have updated my temple prediction map in preparation for General Conference in April. The size of the Church in a specific geographical area (i.e. number of stakes and districts, the number of wards and branches), the age of the oldest stake in a specific geographical area, church growth trends, the distance to the nearest temple, the square-footage of the nearest temple, the historical number of weekly endowment sessions scheduled at the nearest temple, and member and missionary reports regarding member activity, temple attendance, and convert retention are variables used to identify prospective sites for future temple announcements. Also, I have considered traffic and transportation concerns with adding new temple locations to the map. My goal this time was to include all possible locations where temples may be announced considering the characteristics of locations where temples have been recently announced. Altogether, there are 217 potential temples on the map (20 more likely temples, 197 less likely temples) - 54 more locations than included on the map in September 2022. The following 66 locations have been added to the temples prediction map with this current update - all of which are less likely temples:

I liked the way you organized your list.

Fort Union, UT - Near Midvale?? or some other location?

I also like the lists that include the number of stake and districts. That is helpful information. I appreciate those that put in that kind of extra effort.

If you haven't watched A Prophet's Temple Invitation from 2023 RootsTech, I strongly encourage you to do so. It is like four minutes. It gets you pumped up. You can see and feel that we are part of an important work that is just beginning. I am rededicating myself to attend the temple more often and to use Ordinance Ready every time I go.

A temple in North Ogden would likely be called by a different name. Here are some possibilities: Ben Lomond Peak Utah, Temple. Willard Bay Utah Temple. Weber River Utah Temple. Something like that.

Here's the unit split for Iloilo North and the new Iloilo Central:

Iloilo Central Stake - Lapuz, Lapaz, Jaro 1, Jaro 2, Pavia and Leganes 1
Iloilo North Stake - Leganes 2, Dumangas, Pototan, Passi and Calinog

Interesting that Leganes got split between two stakes but meet out of the same building. Passi will apparently be the new stake center, they may need to extend the building. Was still a branch until a couple years ago, has had lots of RM's.

I liked the way your list was formatted.

I also like it when people include the number of stakes and districts with their lists. I don't have easy access to that info, so it is appreciated.

I have heard that there are missionaries receiving mission calls to the Arizona Flagstaff Mission, which has not yet been announced by the Church.

Recently read that the Colorado Fort Collins Mission had a record months for convert baptisms in February. This is now at least the second time that I've heard some very positive news out of Colorado this year.

North Ogden is an interesting idea for a temple. My best guess is that the second temple in Weber County will eventually be built in a place like Farr West or Marriott-Slaterville (or perhaps Hooper/West Haven), rather than in North Ogden. New development in the NE Weber County area seems about done, as there is not a ton of space left for large new neighborhoods, the exception being around North Washington Boulevard, which is only a couple miles straight shot from the Ogden Temple. Ogden is also quite easy to reach from North Ogden and Pleasant View, while the commute from western Weber County can be quite a bit longer depending on traffic.

Flagstaff AZ Temple - Would love to see this happen. However, there are some obstacles. Cottonwood, Prescott, and Prescott Valley stakes would still be about the same distance away from Flagstaff as the Phoenix Temple and would have to cope with winter weather in Flagstaff. Page stake may be slightly closer to Flagstaff than Saint George and the Red Cliffs Temple won't be much shorter in distance. The main advantage would be that Page stake, which has all of its units in Arizona, would be assigned to an Arizona temple. Tuba City stake is definitely closer to Flagstaff, it is scheduled to be in the new Farmington NM temple district. Chinle stake is midway to Farmington and Flagstaff, the advantage would be easier access through Interstate 40. I think the idea is to assign the Navajo Reservation stakes to Farmington. Navajo saints in Utah would be much closer to the Monticello Temple. Partial Navajo Stakes of Gallup NM and Kirtland NM will also be in the Farmington Temple district. Winslow stake is closer to Flagstaff. Holbrook stake is midway between Snowflake Temple and Flagstaff.

Dad Little said...

Just guessing, but a new Flagstaff AZ Mission would probably cover Page, towns along I-40, Snowflake, St. Johns, Cottonwood, Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Kingman. The western Navajo reservation is presently in the Farmington, NM Mission. Reservation units from Chinle AZ Stake and westward would be closer to Flagstaff. The Navajo Reservation has an area about the size of West Virginia in 3 states.

Chris D. said...

I wonder, if the above-mentioned Arizona Flagstaff Mission calls, might be the product of the Arizona Phoenix Mission - 2011115 offices (which currently have the Flagstaff Stakes within its boundaries), could be moving the offices north to the City of Flagstaff, and subsequently being renamed the Arizona Flagstaff Mission? Or even the nearby New Mexico Farmington Mission - 1191624 be moved the offices to Flagstaff and renamed?

Just as a few years ago, the Utah Salt Lake City Mission - 2012499 moved a few miles north to the City of Layton, Utah, and was renamed the Utah Layton Mission - 2012499.

Or like a few months ago in Chile, the Chile Osorno Mission - 2011182, moved to Puerto Montt and was renamed the Chile Puerto Montt Mission - 2011182.

Jim Anderson said...

Orem Utah Mission is actually in Lehi. Not sure of where but FamilySearch is just northwest of the Frontrunner station but that is just a FamilySearch Center on the ground floor and the other three house engineering for the website. That has been there three years at least, heard that from the mission president on a stake broadcast I found.

The matter of a Flagstaff mission is it would be a small one, likely containing only Flagstaff, Prescott, Verde Valley towns, and maybe Payson. Winslow and Holbrook would be included and some of the reservation towns but not all. Kingman would likely stay with a las Vegas area mission along with Laughlin/Bullhead City.

A smaller temple, at most a small midsize temple is more likely than a full mission.

One thing to consider (that may or may not have been pointed out here before) when talking about Stakes created with less units, is that means that more stake leaders (Presidencies, High Councils, and other callings) will be called from a smaller pool of overall people, which increases the amount of members per capita who are trained in leadership positions.

This could be looked at as a "quality over quantity" situation. More members will have the chance to stay actively involved by working and leading thru their callings.

The same idea may hold true for wards and other units created with a similar smaller membership threshold.

This is another reason why I hope groups continue to proliferate - the group leader(s) will have already had the chance to gain some experience before the group graduates to the branch or ward level.

A hypothetical situation where a branch or ward is created from multiple, preexisting groups would have a larger pool of these experienced group leaders to draw from, when the time came to assign branch or ward callings.

Or if the group is later integrated into a preexisting ward or branch, it would be a similar story

The Mexico City Factor – Oceania

Below are the largest metro areas in the Oceania. Using the Mexico City Factor, how likely are these metro areas to have additional temples announced? How important is it for these temples to be located near freeways and/or public transportation hubs? I’ve included some possible temple locations for these metro areas. Please discuss these possibilities and feel free to add or modify. I have never spent any time in Central America and have no familiarity with these areas.

The 10 largest cities in Oceania are:

Sydney , Australia – 1 temple - (5.3 million)

Melbourne, Australia – 1 temple - (5.1 million)

Brisbane, Australia – 1 temple - (2.5 million)

Perth, Australia – 1 temple - (2.1 million)

Auckland, New Zealand – 1 temple - (1.7 million)

Adelaide, Australia – 1 temple - (1.4 million)

Honolulu, Hawaii – 0 temples - (1.0 million)

Gold Coast, Australia - 0 temples - (720k)

Newcastle–Maitland, Australia - 0 temples - (500k)

Canberra–Queanbeyan, Australia (460k)

The Laie Hawaii temple is roughly 30 miles and 60 minutes from downtown Honolulu.

The Brisbane Australia Temple is roughly 50 miles and 60 minutes from downtown Gold Coast.

The Sydney Australia Temple is roughly 90 miles and 105 minutes from downtown Newcastle.

The Sydney Australia Temple is roughly 185 miles and 180 minutes from downtown Canberra.

I am not super familiar with any of these areas. My only thought or idea might be to renovate the historic Honolulu Tabernacle into a temple?

Hobart Tasmania might also be an option utilizing the Elko (distance) factor.

Christchurch, NZ has a population of 380k. It is about 280 miles from Christchurch to Wellington. The travel time is more than 8 hours total, including 4 hours on the ferry.

The 5 known Wards assigned to the new Guayaquil Ecuador Alborada Stake:

194638 Isidro Ayora (from Kennedy Stake)
216631 Guayacanes (from Las Orquideas Stake)
2135094 Jose Maria Egas (from Kennedy Stake)
225541 Los Sauces (from Kennedy Stake)

A historical curiosity, The "Guayaquil Ecuador Alborada Stake - 524948", was organized originally on February 11th, 1996, and was later renamed the Guayaquil Ecuador Kennedy Stake - 524948". And now has split again to reorganize the Alborada Stake again.

"The Guayaquil Ecuador Alborada Stake, which includes the Alborada, Garzota, Samanes, Tanca Marengo, Tarqui, Urdesa and Veintiseis De Febrero wards has been created by area authority Carl B. Pratt.

GUAYAQUIL ECUADOR ALBORADA STAKE: (Feb. 11, 1996) Created from the Guayaquil Ecuador Central and Guayaquil Ecuador North stakes. President - Henry Alejandro Mora Z., 32, coordinator for Church Educational System; wife, Rocio F. Paredes J. de Mora."

In regards to the Washington DC area and the comment that Tyson's Corner could have a temple. A temple in Tyson's Corner would place temples in neighboring Stakes. (The Washington DC Temple is in a stake that covers all of DC as well as the Southwestern part of the county to its north). Tyson's corner is in McLean Stake which includes Tysons and the areas north to the River and along the river to the Pentagon (more or less).

Does the Church currently have any temples in Stakes that border each other?

Note, a Temple in Alexandria would have two stakes that border on a map, but without a direct connection (either crossing from DC into Arlington and then a few miles south to the Stake boundary or south from DC into Maryland and then across the American Legion Bridge.

I would like to see a temple in the northeast part of Lethbridge Canada dedicated 3-6 months before the Cardston, Canada temple is closed for renovation. It was rededicated in 1991 after the last renovation, so without any specific knowledge would expect it to be renovated sometime in the next decade, but just a wild guess. I wonder if the Smithfield temple could have waited a bit longer, except that the Logan is probably due for a renovation soon or perhaps the Logan temple needs a renovation now and it's being pushed back as much as possible until Smithfield is done.

On this note, it really would have been nice if the Redcliff's temple could have been announced sooner so it could be dedicated before the St. George temple was closed for renovation. There are other examples, where I have thought to myself. Hmm... if they had planned temples further out, new temples could have been built sooner. Another example is Modesto temple before the Oakland, CA renovation. Another is that Richmond could have been dedicated before the Washington D.C. temple closed. Cleveland and Pittsburg (and even a Cincinnati) temple could have been done before the Columbus, OH reno. same with the Layton temple before Ogden's renovation. I'm sure there are instances where the renovation itself gave rise to the need and/or awareness of the need for another temple, and I'm not criticizing at all, but just wonder how much this idea is considered. It seems this longer-term planning started being considered part way into the Salt Lake Temple renovation planning, but delays in the Tooele and Taylorsville temples didn't work out quite as planned.

Another thought: Having a new temple built near a historic temple would reduce wear and tear on these buildings and assure capacity for patrons visiting from outside the temple district. I'm thinking Ephraim near Manti.

Anyway, just some thoughts to consider.

I like the idea of a "Ben Lomond Peak" or "Lomond Peak" Temple in North Ogden.

"Pleasant View" Temple is another option, if built in that community.

@ Randolph Finder -- I believe the Regina Saskatchewan and Winnipeg Manitoba West Stakes share a border, and each contain a temple in their stakes boundaries. Of course, the expansive geography of the two is a factor not present in the DC-area stakes.

With currently around 3,500 stakes and 500:districts, 500 temples brings Temples closer to many members.

But after the 500, how many more potential Temples?

Years ago I recall being told Temples are being built for the Millennium.

One wonders by 2030, with the conditions our planet is facing how long before this beautiful globe will itself be celestialised.

Recently heard that the hunt for a greener energy for aviation is not going as well as scientists would like. Having Temples globally will be essential if air travel becomes more prohibitive.

That's it for me, having not had time to study all the Africa, Phillipines, South America possibilities.

I’ve been saying this for a while, but if Canada gets another temple, Lethbridge is the most likely candidate. The city has 3 stakes, and the new temple district could take in the Taber and Medicine Hat stakes, as well, and possibly the Raymond and Fort Macleod stakes. No other city in Canada without a temple has more than one stake in it.

My list for the next temples would add the following not on the map list:
1. Shreveport Louisiana (instead of Longmont TX)
2. Barbados or Trinidad
3. Yerevan Armenia
My most likely list would include the following that are less likely, blue on the map list:
1. Milwaukee Wisconsin
2. Scotch Plains New Jersey
3. Natal Brazil (instead of Joao Pessoa)
4. Rosario Argentina
5. Osorno Chile
My list would include the following that are also yellow on the map list):

6. Houston TX South
7. Charlotte NC
8. Iquitos Peru
9. Florianopolis Brazil
10. Osaka Japan

12. Kampala Uganda
I would EXCLUDE the following potential temples from the list of those likely for this year:
1. Lehi Utah (part of Saratoga Springs, Lindon, and Mt. Timpanogos temple districts.)
2. Santiago Dominican Republic (I think other Caribbean Islands would get a first temple before D.R. gets a second one.)
3. Vina del Mar / Valparaiso (part of the announced Santiago Chile West temple district. I think Osorno will be the next Chile temple.)

Of all the predictions posted, this is the one that makes the most sense to me. I'd like to add my two cents. I grew up in Springville, which has a close kinship with neighboring Mapleton. Mapleton is one of those Wasatch Front small towns that has been developing its large agricultural lands into Suburban neighborhoods(mostly high income upper-class homes). I know of some very large tracts of land in Mapleton that were donated to the church upon the death of the land owner, with the express provision they be used for the building of a future temple. Because Spanish Fork is also quite close to the large Payson Temple, I would predict a Temple announced in Mapleton somewhere near Hwy 89, near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon (which would give it a prominent location) and easy access from an arterial highway. And I would predict they would name it after Maple Mountain, similar to what they did for the Mt. Timpanogos temple. I predict the temple district would be made up of Stakes from Mapleton and Spanish Fork (and mabey Springville and Salem).

Congratulations of getting it right.
