Two New Stakes In Lima, Peru

Last Sunday there was a regional stake conference broadcast for members of the Church in Peru. Speakers in the conference, such as Elder Holland and President Uchtdorf, commented on how someday there will be more temples in Peru. Missionaries stated that one of the obstacles mentioned in the conference that was preventing more temples built in the country was a lack in member activity in areas such as tithing and Church attendance.

According to missionaries serving in the Peru Lima North Mission two new stakes were created last Sunday from two already existing stakes in part of the city. As of yet I do have specifics on the names of the new stakes or which stakes were involved in the split and will provide them under comments once they become available. So far in 2009 there have been a total of six new stakes created in Peru: five in Lima and one in Chimbote. There are now a total of 93 stakes and 24 districts in the country.

This is great news. Someone predicted it wouldn't be that long when Peru can overtake Chile in membership and I believe it will happen very soon.

Peru already has many more stakes than Chile and is going to have a second temple soon. In South America only Brazil is growing faster. When my brother served there, there were only a few hundred members in a handful of branches.

Wow, I did not know that your brother served there so long ago. Yes, I believe it was I who said that membership in Peru what go beyond the Chile level within the next 3-4 years. They allready seem a lot stronger. I hope none of these newly created stakes will be discontinued. I wonder how many new congregations have been created in Peru within the last 5 years. Also I am bit confused why the church was so quiet about the Manama Bahrain Stake. About three years ago a checked some stake websites and I noticed that there was a Desert Springs stake that apparently had units in the gulf states. So I am sure the name change tooked place recently.

The new Lima stakes are the Lima Prolima and the Lima Los Olivos stakes. Are the new stakes in Lima and Sao Paulo suburban or the division of inner city stakes?

The two new stakes in Lima were both created from two already existing stakes: The Lima Peru Puente Piedra and Lima Peru Las Palmeras Stakes. Each of the new stakes have five wards. Both of these stakes were in Northern Lima and part of the Lima Metropolitan Area.
