To be used as a reference, below is a list of LDS membership in 2009 for countries and territories with a reported church presence. Countries with an asterisk have no official LDS membership totals reported and figures are estimates calculated by myself. It is important to note that membership statistics are misleading as they do not take into account member activity rates. For example, in Chile only 345,874 members were assigned to an LDS congregation in the late 2000s (60% of total membership) as the location of the remaining 210,000 members was unknown. Member activity rates for most countries range between 20-40%.

The statistics for Estonia are not accurate. You have Estonia down for 1,010 but it is currently 968, in 2009 Q4 it was 955. Those are official MLS stats.

I was surprised that there are only 20,000 LDS in Russia.
I've just finished counting new wards and branches so far this year (through the end of the first quarter). Here are the totals:
For the first quarter of year, + 67 total units; + 87 W, - 20 br
US: + 43 total units; + 41 W, + 2 br
non-US: + 24 total units; + 46 W, - 22 br
At the same time stakes have increased by 11 (net 10 with one discontinued) and districts are up by 3 (net 2 with one discontinued).
In the US total of the previous post Utah has increased by 26 total units: + 23 W, + 3 br (over half of US increase and over one-third of the world total). There is only one new Utah stake out of the 11 created churchwide so far in 2011.
As a follow on to my report of the first quarter's growth in congregations, here is what I show for growth in 2010:
For the year, + 235 total units: + 321 wards and - 86 branches
US: + 128 units (+152 w, - 24 br)
US: + 14 stakes 10 Ut, 4 non-Ut)
NON-US: + 107 units (+169 w,-62 br)
NON-US: + 18 stakes, - 1 stake
Africa: + 2 stakes
Europe: + 1 stake
Asia: + 2 stakes, - 1 stake
Pacific: + 1 stake (Guam)
Mexico: + 1 stake
So. Amer. + 12 stakes (2 Venez, 10 Brazil)
Ut: + 49 units (+69 w, - 20 br)
Ut: + 10 stakes
Most growth in 2010 occurred later in the year. Also, this does not take into account units created in countries where there is no Church reporting.
Excellent analysis Ray! You do a great job keeping track of congregational growth throughout the Church, and it is much appreciated!
The Salt Lake Tribune is convinced that researchers say retention has improved from prior years.
I have a first hand witness of that with the highest retention rate my ward has ever seen in recent years. The same pattern should be repeating elsewhere.
If so, improved retention can pave the way for greater congregational growth in future. It seems that the church is working to solve its problems and grow faster, this decade is clearly a new beginning for LDS growth.
I believe an annual net growth of 235 units is excellent. With a net growth of 45 units already in 2011!
