  1. "With these announced temples, there are now a total of 2019 temples that are planned or dedicated worldwide."

Wish that wasn't a typo! 209 is still pretty impressive. :)

  2. I have corrected the error.

  3. I have a question - is there a reason why a majority of Church leadership references their middle initial (sometimes first, like M. Russel Ballard)? I know this has been going on for some time, but I am curious as to why that is.

    1. I always use a first initial. I have called by my middle name my whole life.

  4. Here in Bloomfield Hills Michigan Stake in the Michigan Detroit mission there has been a decision to not assign full-time missionaries to either the Troy Ward or the Bloomfield Hills Ward. Considering that I once came across a post to an anti-Mormon site from a member of the Troy Ward glorifying in that the stake leadership had had to reverse a shrinking of the area of the ward at one point because convert baptisms that were hoped for had not come about, part of me feels that Troy Ward especially is not a workable place.

My branch the Belle Isle Branch, is going from 2 to 3 sets of missionaries. We have not yet had a baptism this year, but had at least 6 last year. Only 4 of the 6 were at church last Sunday though.

Use of middle initials is considered a more formal and respectful way to refer to people. It was very common in almost all places in the US until 50 years ago. It is one thing the New York Times regularly does. On the other hand there are 3 presidents of the Church who are always referred to be their full 3 names.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Okay, I figured it was for formality. Thanks for the reply!

    ReplyDelete
  6. The first initial indicates they do not use their first name but use their middle name as their name.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I would imagine it is also to distinguish them from others that have their same name.

The 3 with full names almost always being used would be Joseph Fielding Smith (distinction from the other 2 with same first and last name), George Albert Smith (first and last is common name combo) and Ezra Taft Benson (there is another Ezra Benson in church history).

    ReplyDelete
  8. Awesome information about leadership names.

  9. The Church announced today on Mormonnewsroom.org the Open Houses and Rededication dates for Raleigh and Baton Rouge temples.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith was named after his father, Pres. George Albert Smith after his grandfather and Pres. Benson after his great-grandfather- in all 3 cases it was the exact same name so the family undoubtedly used the full name to distinguish them from their ancestor.

  11. Belle Isle makes a lot of sense to put more missionaries in, lots of middle-class developments in St. Clair and eastern Macomb counties. The Bloomfield Hills/Troy areas have large sections that have a lot of well-off people, they may also have the Rochester missionaries take any referrals that surface.

    ReplyDelete
  12. President Benson was known as "T" (his middle initial) growing up. He only started using his full name after becoming an apostle. Joseph Fielding Smith used "Joseph F. Smith, Jr." until his father died.

    ReplyDelete
  13. An Ezra T. Benson served as a seventy at some time well before Ezra Taft Benson was known of.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ezra T. Benson was a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles from 1846 until his death in 1869

Groundbreaking for the Quito Temple is next Saturday (May 11) and Lima Los Olivos is next month. Hopefully we see more scheduled in the coming months.

  16. Also, on the theme of future temples, Any comments on Elder Uchdorf's Ministering Tour to Germany and Austria recently? More specifically the cities of Salzburg Austria, Berlin Germany and Dresden Germany? All 3 having current or past Mission HQ. I could see any or all 3 announced future Temple site. Possibly scouting out sites for the First Presidency?

  17. Chris,
With two German Temples, and a Budapest Hungary Temple, think we are someway off for new Tenples in that region.

  18. Great to have temples in Hungary and Italy, covering more of southern Europe than ever before. The Rock is rolling forth as prophesied by Daniel.
    Get on the bus.
I wrote a post about Gifts of God, if anyone is interested.

Elder Uchdorf spoke mostly about missionary work at a member devotional on the 20.April. The devitonal should be available online, but i could not find it with a quick search. The other meetings where mostly with the missionaries of the 3 german missions.

  22. Elder Uchtdorf referred briefly to a potential temple in Hamburg (which I think is the area in Germany that would most need it, based on traveling times to Frankfurt). He said that local members keep asking him about it, and said that with their faith and effort increasing, it would eventually happen. Not sure if this is to be considered a prophecy or not, especially given the major realignment of units that region has seen lately. But I think that Hamburg is the only place that could be on a list for another temple in Germany in the next half century, unless something really unexpected happens.

  23. Potomac SA Ward, Mount Vernon VA Stake split today.

    Potomac SA 1st Ward
Potomac SA 2nd Ward (new ward)

With all the new singles moving into the Washington DC Area, the church bought and renovated a office building for these Midsingles Wards (31-45) to meet. The two YSA Wards meet in the next door office building which was converted into a church a few years ago. So one building for YSAs, and one building for Midsingles.

  24. Elder Uchtdorf may be slightly biased ;) But there is a pretty good track record of Apostles' temple predictions coming true, even if it takes decades.

  25. Just in, got this off a Facebook group for family history consultants, a news story about the plans being filed with the county for the Richmond Temple, it will be in the adjacent county since Richmond is an 'independent city' there. The rendering pictured is Pocatello since the Richmond one will be of a similar size.

  27. Sorry for so many posts so quickly, but someone just posted to a Facebook group regarding church music that a very major announcement is to be made this Thrsday regarding that subject, no details were provided on what she thought that could possibly be. The new hymnbook will not be out for at least a couple years.

  32. Is the ward music chair supposed to be at ward council?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ap present, no, but they can be asked to attend on occasion.

I am a ward music chair, my choir director selects that music, and I take sacrament music selection. Varies from ward to ward who does what among those in music callings such as choristers (now officially called Music Directors), and pianists/organists. Due to my stroke I can't go out certain times like at night, so we have designated a coordinator to assist me with intermediate musical numbers and those types of special things.

  34. Thanks for the correction, John. Now that you mention it, I think I had heard about Pres. Benson having that nickname growing up. Did not know the thing about Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith. But I've been thinking there were a couple other GA's who went by their full names- this morning I remembered two: John Henry Smith (George Albert's father) who was an apostle and briefly served in the First Presidency from 1910-1911, and Levi Edgar Young who was in the First Council of 70 from 1909-1963- he was senior president of the 70 from 1941 until his death.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I had forgotten John Henry Smith. No easy way to explain him not being J. Heney Smith or John H. Smith. Which might mean there is more going on with George Albert Smith. John Henry Smith's brother George A. Smith Jr was killed by Navajo while on a mission to the Hopi. He is the person who St. George, Utah is most known for.

I have been thinking that with an aging population we will see older converts. We have seen a few in my branch. On the other hand we had a 60 something year old there 2 Sundays ago who by the next Sunday had been incarcerated.

We had another recent convert whose family claimed the missionaries were manipulating her and is currently appealing the no contact ruling with the church she was put under.

  40. It looks like the rumor that Thursday would see an announcement on music was true. I have not yet understood what it means. There are strategic goals. Probably also a hope to get more hymns meeting those goals submitted by July. Also a good time to remind the people who have been working to perfect their hymns it is time to submit them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Las Vegas does have around 30 stakes and last I checked there were quite a few YSA and SA wards to make a YSA stake or two. Plus Las Vegas is growing rapidly from what I was told about 20,000 people per day. I'm not sure what number is LDS but I can also see a second temple in the Vegas area pretty soon. I can also see Las Vegas hitting 1 million residents by 2024

      Delete
    2. A second temple in greater Dallas would seem more likely first since the temple districts have roughly the same number of stakes but the Las Vegas Temple is twice as big.

      Delete
    3. I agree. I think a temple in Fort Worth would be good. Also in the Seattle area around Tacoma as well. To be honest i see those at least announced around 5 years down the road.

  45. Vegas is already past two million population. The northwest and south are where the development is as the east and west have the mountains, perhaps also north of 215 eventually where that goes from 95 to I-15 and some growth is expected now near the racetrack north of the 215 interchange too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was going by the population of Vegas alone. The city alone is around 650,000. But if you add North LV, Henderson, Paradise Summerlin etc the population combined is around 2.2 million. It's like Salt Lake. Salt Lake City alone is about 200,000 est. But add the surrounding communities you get about 1 million. Plus one of the reasons LV is growing so fast (i heard this from a 3rd party) is because people are moving from California because of Nevada's lower taxes.

"...their sprawling itinerary including airport stops in Sao Paulo, Cuiaba, Juiz de Fora, Campinas, Goiania, Brasilia, Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro. ..."

Of those, specifically, the cities of Cuiaba, Juiz de Fora and Goiania, have no Temple in any stages of construction or announced. Maybe scouting future sites? All 3 having current Mission HQs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would love to see temples in all 3. However Goiania is fairly close to Brasilia so might not be likely.

      Delete
  50. Sao Paulo to Campinas is like from Provo to Bountiful, one narrower freeway through the cities and one truck-filled bypass around Jundiai, Valinhos and several others, so they had to deal with all that just to get to Campinas, no sense in flying between the two.

Cuiaba is way out there, really not a lot of people in MT or MS states, not sure the member population in those states or neighboring ones around those two.

Goiania is a couple hours from Brasila DF, I am not sure about Juiz de Fora though Goiania's general population has exploded from 750k to 2 million or more in 40 years yet only has two or three stakes plus Angeles between that and Brasilia

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would accept 20k tourists daily visiting Las Vegas. Tourists are not inhabitants. Big difference. Sorry, I have a pet peeve for statements that do not have a modicum of sense. 20,000 a day...
Maybe Tokyo, Shanghai, or Mexico City in its highest year ever...

    Replies
    1. According to lasvegasrealestate.org the population increases to 127+ per day.

      Delete
    2. 3,000 new move-ins per month? That is huge, but seems more realistic. Thanks for the correction in estimates.

      Delete
  52. Vegas itself has very little of the Strip, which is where many of the nearly 40 million plus visitors a year, that's 100k a day on average, all of the best known stuff is actually in the unincorporated area known as Paradise which has just over 200k regular residents.

But the young, sometimes transient nature of the metro region is fertile ground for missionary activity, I am sure the locals there are aware of that, and if it were to really take off we would see a second temple. Unsure of siting though although near the westside 215 freeway is a reasonable guess.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When I served there in 2000-2002 we had high baptisms but low retention. It was the missionaries baptizing and many members balking at converts from a different socio-economic background. The transient nature of the population undercut retemtion efforts.

Another problem was that most people did not have a clear vision of getting new converts to do baptisms for the dead as quick as possible. Still I was in one ward where 2 unrelated converts went and got endowed the same week a year after baptism. There had been 23 baptism the previous year and only 2 got endowed the 4 months I was in that ward. However some of the baptized had been youths so even if retention and progression in the Church had both been at 100% there would not have been 23 endownments that year.

  54. If a new temple was announced for the Summerlin area of Las Vegas, I suspect it would be built near the corner of Alta and Hualapai. The Church owns land there, plus there's a stake center a half mile to the west (and there's vacant plot large enough to build a second chapel right next to the stake center).

I don't think it will happen for awhile since the Las Vegas Temple's attendence is down.
