Māori-Speaking Branch Organized in New Zealand

Last Sunday, the Church organized a Māori-speaking branch in the northern portion of the North Island of New Zealand. This is the first time in 70 years that the Church has operated Māori-speaking branch in New Zealand. The Church's article on the new branch organization can be found here.

Very cool! When I went to the Polynesian Cultural Center in 2002 I was impressed how the non-Maori New Zealanders would learn song and dance and culture of their native island.
Unique and beautiful cultures down there. We need more haka.
I new Kiwis while attending BYU Provo, very lucky to get to know them. Great people.

For the interest of all concerned, this morning, the Church announced that Elder and Sister Gong had tested positive for COVID-19, but are actively receiving medical care and involved with contact tracing while experiencing mild symptoms. Additionally, the First Presidency today acted earlier than usual in sending out counsel to Church members, especially in the United States, on the importance of voting during this election year. Anyone interested can read my thoughts on these developments at the following web address:

My thanks once again to you all.

The Macedonia ward was created today in the Marietta East stake in Georgia. It will be in the eastern part of Cherokee county with a Canton, Georgia address. There has been a trend to align wards in this area with high school attendance zones. In the Coal Mountain stake, (mostly Forsyth County ) a little to the east there are now more wards than high schools. So hopefully Cherokee county will have the same “problem” in the coming years!

Does anyone know how many ethnically Māori members of the church there are?

Brett Stirling said...

In 2013 it was 46% of membership.

It appears a branch was recently organized in Malawi.

Only 4 wards for the Rigby stake? That’s an interesting choice, I thought policy was 5+. Perhaps a ward split is imminent.

Adding to my previous comment, the other three surrounding Rigby stakes have 7, 10, and 9+1 wards in them. The organization of a stake with only 4 wards is an extremely interesting decision. Even more fascinating, we could see another stake easily organized in Rigby. The continued growth in East Idaho is nothing short of astounding.

Recently organized : "Politécnico YSA Ward - 2161699, Estaca Ciudad de México Arbolillo (México City Arbolillo Stake) - 507326"

I don't know if it is the 1st YSA ward organized in the Greater Mexico City region?

Are there many or few YSA Units in Mexico?

John Pack Lambert said...

I am pretty sure this newly formed one is the first YSA unit formed in Mexico.

Maybe there are enough members at the National Polytechnical University to justify a YSA ward opening up. If so that is historic.

I would imagine they would set one up fairly soon at UNAM on the other side of town, or even for different universities in Puebla that are very close together...
