Due to the large number of temples announced today, I will be separating my analysis of new temple announcements into separate blog posts by world region.
Laoag Philippines Temple
The Laoag Philippines Temple will be the Church's 13th temple in the Philippines following temples in Manila (dedicated in 1984), Cebu (dedicated in 2010), Urdaneta (announced in 2010), Alabang (announced in 2017), Cagayan de Oro (announced in 2018), Davao (announced in 2018), Bacolod City (announced in 2019), Tacloban City (announced in 2021), Naga (announced in October 2022), Santiago (announced in October 2022), Tuguegarao City (announced in April 2023), and Iloilo (announced in April 2023). The Philippines is the country with the fewest completed temples (2) with the most temples announced or under construction (11). The new temple will likely have one of the smallest temple districts in the Philippines, as there are only four stakes and two districts that appear likely to be assigned to the new temple (only the Tuguegarao Philippines Temple has a smaller prospective temple district with three stakes and two districts). Travel in the Philippines is often costly and time-consuming which has likely played a role with the announcement of temples in locations with few stakes like Laoag. The Church has operated a stake in Laoag since 1989 and created the Philippines Laoag Mission in 2004. The newest stake to be created in the Laoag area was in Vigan in 2021. There are approximately 850,000 Latter-day Saints in the Philippines organized into 126 stakes and 55 districts.
Osaka Japan Temple
The Osaka Japan Temple will be the Church's fifth temple in Japan following the Tokyo Japan Temple (dedicated in 1980), the Fukuoka Japan Temple (dedicated in 2000), the Sapporo Japan Temple (dedicated in 2016), and the Okinawa Japan Temple (scheduled for dedication in November 2023). The new temple will probably service six stakes and two districts in southern Honshu and Shikoku. The Osaka Japan Stake was organized in 1972 and the area is serviced by the Japan Kobe Mission. The Church has experienced two significant iterations of consolidating stakes and congregations in the Osaka area during the past 25 years. Today, there is only one stake in Osaka, whereas there used to be four stakes in Osaka in the 1990s. I have considered Osaka as a more likely location for a temple announcement due to distance to Tokyo and several stakes in the Osaka-Kyoto-Kobe metropolitan area. The Church in Japan has experienced essentially stagnant membership growth in recent years, and there are currently approximately 130,000 Latter-day Saints in Japan.
Ulaanbaatar Mongolia Temple
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia has been on my short list of likely locations to have a temple announced for many years. The new temple will be the Church's first temple in Mongolia. Prior to today's announcement, Mongolia ranked as the country with the second most Latter-day Saints without a temple. There were approximately 12,500 Latter-day Saints in Mongolia as of year-end 2022. The Church in Mongolia is extremely far away from the nearest temples in Seoul, South Korea; Taipei, Taiwan; and Hong Kong, China. The new temple will be one of the most remote temples in the world once completed. The Church first established a branch in Mongolia in 1993 and experienced rapid growth during the 1990s and 2000s. There are now two stakes in Ulaanbaatar which were organized in 2009 and 2016. One district also operates in Darkhan. Slow membership growth and stagnant congregational growth have occurred during the past decade. Mongolia has one of the highest percentages of Latter-day Saints in the general population among Asian nations, as 0.37% of the Mongolian population was a Latter-day Saint as of year-end 2022 (one Latter-day Saint per 272 people). The new temple will service the two stakes and one district in Mongolia, and it may also service branches and one district in Siberia and the Russian Far East.
The nber of temples announced or operational in Africa, 29, exceeds the number as of the day I was born for the while earth, 27.
ReplyDeleteThe temples announced for Africa were very encouraging. Even if I was very sad that Kampala was not announced.
Kampala moves back to the top of my list, with Bo and also Yamosoukro and either Lome/Cotonou also getting on it.
Cape Coast is the oldest stake outside of South Africa without an announced temple.
Mbuji-Mayi I was so glad at. I may have put it on a list, but I did not expect it so soon.
Ulaambatoor I had only been convinced was likely when an apostle spoke of it soon.
Osaka I still am not familiar enough with the geography of Japan to say much on.
Laoag I have seen as a possibility. I am still thinking Angeles we will see soon.
The Philippines are at 2 operational and 13 total temples. This is more announced temples than Mexico had when President Hinckley died.
Matt, I agree with you for these 3 locations, except from my map I had included 7 possible stakes for the Osaka Temple. You may not agree or had considered the Okayama Japan Stake from the Fukuoka Temple District.

Chris D., I like the way you've shown he progression of the temple districts above. I think I agree with your assessments.
ReplyDeleteHere's an early crack at April 2024 based on some shifting priorities:
Edinburgh/Glasgow, Scotland
Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire
Abuja, Nigeria
Kampala, Uganda
Lomé, Togo
Angeles, Philippines
Santiago, Dominican Republic
Chihuahua, Mexico
Santa Ana, El Salvador
Maracaibo, Venezuela
Pisco, Peru
Rosario, Argentina
Florianópolis/São José, Brazil
South Houston Metro (Sugar Land)
Des Moines, IA
Augusta, ME
Evanston/Lyman/Bridger Valley, WY
Flagstaff/Prescott, AZ
Coeur d’Alene/Post Falls/Hayden, ID
Price, UT
Renovation Announcement: Logan, UT (at opening of Smithfield temple)
I think we will continue to see remote locations get prioritization over the next couple conferences, which is why I now suspect Price will be the next Utah temple announced. This would also correlate with Heber Valley having been the last Utah temple announced. Coeur d'Alene is probably the major exception to that rule here, but having heard the Spokane temple is running at capacity and being a small Hinckley temple, I think a second temple in the area is the easier answer given continued growth in Post Falls and Hayden in particular.
Much like Provo being closed at Orem's dedication for reconstruction, I expect Logan to close for the final Pioneer temple renovation after Smithfield opens. I am hopeful that the Church has held off on Logan to give extra thought and consideration as to how to move forward with this renovation, and that it will result in a true restoration of Pioneer detail.
Also, to speak briefly of Peru. I am incredibly happy to see both Piura (who I thought would get a temple before Chiclayo due to distance) and Huancayo get temples. The Church is steadily covering the distant holes in Peru. I still think a third temple in Lima is likely, more towards the southern end of the metropolis, but I've started having this feeling that the time is finally coming for what I thought would be decades after I served there: a temple covering the outer zones of the Lima Peru South mission. A temple in Pisco would be ideally situated for Chincha, Pisco, and Ica stakes, along with the Cañete and Nazca districts. I would also expect the Ayacucho stake to be assigned as it does cut about a half hour off of a trip to Huancayo. Nothing would make me happier than seeing those good Saints receive a local temple.
Matt or anyone else, I had a question: As observed in this post, Mongolia had been the second nation in the top ten with the strongest Church presence without a temple. With one for Mongolia announced now, does anyone know which nation will be added to the top ten list now? I know the order of the top ten nations usually is first determined by membership numbers. Based on data I have, the top ten list should be Uganda, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Jamaica, Guyana, Togo, Micronesia, Benin, Belize, and Zambia. Does that sound right?
ReplyDeleteList of upcoming cities in Brazil that should receive temples at some point in the next few years (including the announcement forecast):
ReplyDelete- Florianópolis/São José, Santa Catarina [April 2024]
- Santa Maria, Passo Fundo or Friendship Frontier (Livramento/Rivera), Rio Grande do Sul [April or October 2024]
- Cuiabá, Mato Grosso or Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul [October 2024]
- Sorocaba, São Paulo [April 2025]
- Triple Border (Foz do Iguaçu/Puerto Iguazu/Ciudad del Leste), Paraná [April or October 2025]
- Rio Branco, Acre or Porto Velho, Rondônia [April 2026]
- São Luiz, Maranhão or Palmas, Tocantins [April or October 2027]
- Uberlândia, Minas Gerais [2028]
- Araçatuba or São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo [2028]
- São Paulo #3 or São José dos Campos, São Paulo [2028]
- Fortaleza #2, Ceará [2029]
- Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul or Joinville, Santa Catarina [2030]
Daniel,
ReplyDeleteCraig H here with a question or two.
My extended list pretty well matches up with your list for Brazil.
However, long-term, what do you see the odds are for both Cuiabá and Campo Grande getting Temples.
Also, what do you see as the possibility of a Temple north of Rio de Janeiro as a long-term option?
Craig,
DeleteI wouldn't be able to tell you much about the north of the State of Rio, I have friends there but I don't know the maturity of the people in that part of the Kingdom. Apparently the Campos Stake should reinforce the Vitória temple district, as it is equidistant between this temple and the Rio temple. The large number of State units are located around the city of Rio proper, so I can imagine in the distant future a second temple in Rio itself or in Niterói instead of a temple further north.
Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul have a history that is somewhat reminiscent of the Dakotas, both in terms of settlement and because it is a border area and agricultural expansion. Both were just one state until the 1960s. Together, they only have 7 stakes or districts, some of which are quite old. I personally believe that the announcement of the construction of the temple in one city will necessarily remove the other from the race, but given the distances and the recent announcement of Vitória under the same conditions (with only 4 units), perhaps I am quite mistaken.
I am sure that Brazil should be a preferred destination for new modular temples, which should occupy these smaller cities. The construction culture in the country, as you may know, is very dependent on masonry and reinforced concrete, using only steel rebars in cement alloys instead of complete steel reinforcement. This makes the construction process cheaper, but makes it more time-consuming. The use of new modules, dry construction and BIM planning technology will be interesting to observe.
I am thinking Calabar Nigeria Temple may be the best temple to go to for most members in Cameroon as well.
ReplyDeleteJ.P.L. I agree with you completely. I never really understood why the Cameroon Yaoundé Mission and as such the 2 Mission Districts (Yaoundé and Douala) were assigned to the Kinshasa D.R.C. Temple when it was dedicated a few years ago. Instead of the logistically closer Aba Nigeria Temple. Except they are both predominantly (I suppose) French speaking. So the sessions could be given in native French language for both the DRC and Cameroonian Saints. English is the 2nd official language for Cameroon since the old French and British colonies became a federation in 1961, according to Wikipedia.
ReplyDeleteFor me it seemed much closer and easier for them to travel to Aba and then in the future to Eket or Calabar now, from Yaoundé or Douala.
In the case of Mongolia (and other areas like Portugal), when the Church is new and exciting, there isn't an established church culture, so people join the church based on the ideals of the restored gospel. After the church gets established, there's a local church culture that gets established, and often that culture can appear cliquey, judgmental, off-putting to newer members, which deters church growth. Also members get complacent with the status quo and don't feel the urgency to have a growth mindset to help share the gospel with others.
ReplyDeleteI'm just wondering if those are contributing factors to stagnant growth in many areas of the Church.
And speaking of Interreligion cooperation. Here is an article about a Rwandan Catholic Cardinal who just visited Church Headquarters.

OC Surfer: All your ideas are relevant, in my opinion. The "new" factor can lead a lot of people to join the Church with emotion and excitement. This happened in Chile for decades. It can happen to individually or collectively.
ReplyDeleteIn short it is the history of Christianity and humanity writ large.
We need to stick with what makes us go, which is sometimes hard to do. Or, most times. Faith in the Lord requires perspicacity and diligence. And a lot of love and forgiving.
Switzerland is an interesting case actually. The Bern temple is quite large, due to its status as the first temple built on the European mainland. For the longest time I had not really considered the possibility of a second temple in Switzerland and neither have most of the members I met there as a missionary I'm sure (Miro might like to correct me on this). But at second glance, it is not that inconceivable to have a temple in Geneva someday. There are two stakes in francophone Switzerland and my anecdotal understanding is that this part of Switzerland accounts for somewhere between 60 and 80% of the (admittedly modest) membership growth in the country these days. A temple in Geneva could also serve the Lyon and perhaps even Nice stakes in France, depending on how willing the Church is to build another temple in France eventually and where. Currently my understanding is that members from these stakes tend to attend the Swiss Temple over the one in Paris.
ReplyDeleteI would say the probability of this is not that high currently but in the climate we're in, I would also not be completely shocked.
The Church has English-speaking units in Cameroon. After World War I the former German Colony of Kamerun was split between French and British administered trust Territories. They were reunited in the 1960s, but I think part of the British zone was given to Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteThe extent to which people in Camerron actually speak either French or English is another story. At some point to reach every nation, kindred, tongue and people we will need to do things fully in local and not just colonial languages. That process has begun, but the logistics of it are complicated. Especially in large urban centers like Kinshasa and Lagos.
There is progress on translations to Kinyarwanda, the language of Rwanda, but Rwanda is the rare country on the African continent that closely corresponds to a pre-colonial state, and this has a fairly uniform local language. Nigeria and many other countries have literally hundreds of languages.
I did read once a blog posted by some senior missionaries who went with the first Cameroon group to go to the temple. They went to Aba. The car often got stuck in the mud. The senior missionaries themselves were not able to go into Nigeria.
I know in a previous comment it was mentioned about any updates for the future Budapest Hungary Temple. Here is a recently posted article not totally unrelated to Budapest. Some may find it encouraging that the President of Hungary recently met with the First Presidency.
ReplyDelete"Hungary’s president meets with First Presidency, speaks at BYU

Chris D., while this is extremely encouraging, it's important to keep in mind that the Hungarian president is mostly a ceremonial role - the vast majority of civil power is invested in the Prime Minster, currently Viktor Orbán (who doesn't strike me as particularly committed to religious freedom for non-catholics). I very much hope that this leads to a productive relationship with Hungary though.
DeleteOne thing about the Mongolia temple is that it's Visa free for Russian citizens and evisa for Chinese mainland. Not saying it will be easy for any of them to get there, but a Mongolian temple does make it a possibility for these members to attend, and I think it's more a probability at the moment than a temple in Russia. Even if there's a temple in European Russia (where the 3 stakes are), it will still save on the commute for those in Asian Russia.
ReplyDeleteThe Swiss temple is propbly one of the largest temples in terms of capacity. (The London temple is the only one i think might have a larger capacity). It has 4 endoment rooms with 60 seats each (recently reduced from 68). During the week there are only few patrons exept during times when the French or the Italians have school vacation. Saturday mornings are often very busy often using 2 ordinance rooms at once. No sessions on Saturday afternoon for different reason. Not enough temple workers. Bad traffic You need often 1 hour more than expecdted. This leads to very few patrons wanting to to to the temple saturaday afternoon. Traffic is also a problam during the week, so no session in the eveining exept for friday. Every time i tried to attend the friday eveining session i missed it because of traffic. I still think a Geneva temple is unlikly but might be anounced in a few years. I think it is to close to Bern. A fromer stake president of mine very much wanted a tempple in Zurich. He even made plans and submitted them to the administration in Frankfurt. But I don't see it happen. A Possibility would be to build a temple in Geneva and Zurich and then close the Bern temple, but I think this is very unlikly.
ReplyDeleteThere are still a lot of Italians comming to the Swiss temple. (Specially when there is school vacation in Italy). The main reason for that is that im told that they cannot find any room in the Rom temple hostel. Other reasons are cost and distance. I think a Milano temple is needed any likly in the forseable future.
Also some good news from a war torn country.
ReplyDelete"Church helps open new health clinic in Ukraine

In thinking about potential sites in the United States States(not announcements), I've noticed a pattern. I see on Google maps areal view that a lot of temples are built either on or adjacent existing church property or near a church of another denomination (adjacent, across the street, around the corner, or on the same street). This may have to do with zoning.
ReplyDeleteFYI, for any that are interested. It was just brought to my attention from a friend that the Vero Beach Florida Stake (2059363) has been renamed the "Palm Bay Florida Stake (2059363)".
ReplyDeletehttps://maps.churchofjesuschrist.org/stakes/2059363
I wonder if it was due to internal mergers or consolidations of the units or neighboring stakes?
Chris D.,
ReplyDeleteIt appears it was simply renaming as I don't see any stake consolidations. Although, I'm not ruling out realignments. Vero Beach building is still the "Stake Center". Palm Bay has more units and is more central to the present stake which is probably why it's got its namesake.
My stake is the Searcy Arkansas Stake even though the stake center is in Jacksonville as Searcy acts more as the centroid for the stake (the Searcy building is two small to take on stake offices). On the contrary, the North Little Rock Stake is more centered around Conway (which has more units as well), but is still called the North Little Rock Stake. There's a number of examples of both situations as I'm assuming both ways of naming are acceptable.
It Looks like wards got shifted around stakes.
ReplyDeleteFort Pierce Ward, Okeechobee Branch went to Stuart Florida stake.
Sebring Ward and Lake Placid Branch to Lakeland Florida Stake
Satellite Beach Ward and Melbourne Ward to the renamed Palm Bay Florida stake (former Vero Beach)
RUMOR: But not sure where. A real estate person (probably an office staffer) learned that in his area the Church purchased 12 acres of land adjacent to a major freeway exit. Best dlue is he said there are chapels all over nearby. And the parcel is too big to just have a meetinghouse.
ReplyDeleteMatt, Thanks for the update on Coronel Chile District (418676).
ReplyDeletehttps://maps.churchofjesuschrist.org/stakes/418676
A little history of Coronel Chile Stake.
ReplyDeleteIn the 2013 Church News Almanac copy of the Deseret News, page 457, it lists the Stake number 2334 (numbered by the Church News staff), Coronel Chile Stake, organized March 23rd, 1997.
http://www.ldschurchnewsarchive.com/articles/29716/New-stake-presidencies.html (sorry this old archive link is no longer found, with the weekly New Stake Presidents Biographies posted 1997-08-03).
It was downgraded on November 17th, 2002 to become Coronel Chile District (418676).
And now almost 21 years later, according to Matt's research is planned to become a Stake again later this month October 2023.

ReplyDeleteAbout creation of Stakes: the standard prescribed in the General Handbook is 50% higher in the USA and Canada compared to other countries. If this "surplus" were reduced to 25%, numerous Stakes could be organized in the US and Canada. After all, does it make much of a difference whether a Stake in the US has 180 or 150 tithing priesthood holders? What do you think about that ?

ReplyDeleteThree stakes in Chile in just one year. I think we haven't seen that in over 20 years.
ReplyDeleteI visited the Coronel district a few years ago and the people were just wonderful. I'm very glad they'll have a stake again.
I could be wrong, but I believe a lot of the new Stakes in Chile, outside of those in larger locations, are resulting from the strengthening of Districts to the point they can advance to become Stakes.

One would think a 12 acre site very close to a major freeqmway exotic would be a good location for a temple. One might also think there would not be opposition.
ReplyDeleteOne could well be wrong about the later point. I could see people claiming such a site would be better used for land that can be directly taxed and it might be claimed other uses would generate more jobs.
In the US due to RLUIPA a city could not directly use those ideas to stop the issuing of permits.
Tomorrow Feather River California and McAllen Texas temples will be dedicated. My mom lived in Martsville, right by Yuba City, for 2 of the years she was in high school.
My soster-in-law's brother served his mission in McAllen Texas.
Now that both the McAllen Texas and Feather River California Temples have been dedicated today. Here is my thoughts on the natural progression starting a few weeks when the Bangkok Thailand Temple will be dedicated next in the Asia Area, of the Stakes and Districts that i feel would naturally go from the current assigned Hong Kong China Temple to the new Bangkok Thailand Temple District and subsecquently to Bengaluru, Phnom Penh, Singapore and Jakarta accordingly once they are completed construction.

My wife and I participated in the dedication of the McAllen Texas Temple earlier today. Elder Uchtdorf presided and offered the dedicatory prayer. He was assisted by Bishop Waddell of the Presiding Bishopric, and a couple of general authority seventies.
ReplyDeleteElder Uchtdorf also dedicated the new stake center built on the same property. It was a beautiful service, one that has been anxiously awaited by those of us in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. It's the 183rd dedicated temple, according to Elder Uchtdorf.
We could not be happier. The temple is four miles from our home as the hummingbird flies, about a 10-minute drive. After the eight-hour roundtrip drive to and from the San Antonio Texas Temple, we will soon be spoiled.
Be well, all. Hurrah for Israel!
David Tilton, congratulations! The 184th temple of the Church was also dedicated today. Elder Soares is in Yuba City for the dedication of the Feather River California Temple. My hope is that these new temples will be widely used. Too often, Church members including myself at times) forget the blessings of having a temple nearby. My wife and I are trying to be more consistent in our temple attendance and I hope the same is true for people in both new temple districts. Congratulations again!
DeleteChris D, interested about your predictions there, specifically regarding ultimate Singapore & Jakarta temples. I'm pretty sure that both West Malaysia districts will be put with Singapore. I've thought the East Malaysia districts on Borneo would also end up there. But I could see those going either way.
ReplyDeleteInterested in your thoughts.
Alex, correct, it is hard to say for the Malaysia districts which way it will go in the end. To Singapore or Jakarta or even a future Kuala Lumpur. That's kind of why I put either Singapore or Jakarta for those districts.
ReplyDeleteI had also for todays McAllen Texas District, according to Rick's list on his Temples website, only the 5 Stakes on the north side of the Rio Grande (USA) / Río Bravo (MEX), which fit with the description in the Church News article about today's Dedication.

"...will serve members in Corpus Christi and Laredo, Texas, in addition to those in Rio Grande Valley."
I had also predicted it would include 4 Stakes and 1 District on the south side of the river. Namely, due to closeness to the McAllen Texas site compared to traveling all the way to Monterrey Mexico Temple site. Any thoughts?

Chris, I hate to bring up politics here, but I need to. Due to the US Congress' failure to repurpose some funding, the law requires President Joe Biden to add a significant amount of work to the wall at the US/Mexico border. He has no choice. With more of that border wall going up, the Saints in the Monterrey Mexico stakes you identified likely won't have easy access to anywhere in the United States, including McAllen. Therefore, the boundaries of that temple district are the first to be impacted by the border wall. Matt, if this comment is not appropriate here, feel free to delete it. Sorry

The 2021 Canadian Census is 85,315 - down from 105,365 in 2011. I wish it was more positive, but I thought I would like to know. The church membership hasn't seen any growth either.
ReplyDeleteJames, there's already a temple in Monterrey. The McAllen Temple district consists of only Texas stakes as well as four branches not part of a stake and administered by the mission. These stakes and branches are entirely in the US.

David, I was, of course, aware of the Monterrey Mexico Temple. Chris's question was why certain stakes weren't transferred from the Monterrey district to McAllen, and the stakes he mentioned were all in Mexico. Sorry if my comment wasn't clear enough on that.
DeleteDoes anyone have an idea on what the locations assigned to McAllen might mean in regards to a possible Temple in Matamoros or Reynosa, short-term or long-term?
ReplyDeleteCraig H
Since for the putlrposes of official assignments it seems to have been decided that nothing South of the Border will be assigned to McAllen, I think the possibility of a Reynosa Temple exists.
ReplyDeleteI still think Chuhuahua City, Poza de Rica, Ciudad Obregon, and maybe say Morelia and Zacatecas are likely to come sooner.
On the other side of the border I think El Paso is likely to get a temple.
I was looking at a map, and if Mexicali could count of Imperial Valley and Yuma Stakes for support I think it would be a strong candidate for getting a temple as well.
I do have a vaguely hope Durango will get a temple, but I an not sure with Torreon getting one that is likely short term.
One thing in Durango's favor is that apparently Torreon is only set to be 10 000 square feet and will likely end up serving 5 States and 2 Districts in the immediate area.
