Details on the Church in Pakistan

The Church has released statistical information on the Church in Pakistan for the first time since 2001. In a recent LDS Church News article, the Church reported it had 2,000 members and seven branches in 2007 and that it currently has 4,000 members, 13 branches, and three districts. The Church also reported the year Pakistan was dedicated for missionary work (2007 by Elder Dallin H. Oaks).

For more information about the Church in Pakistan, please refer to a recent case study I wrote for cumorah.com.

  1. It is marvelous to see substantive growth in a restrictive nation with the size and potential of Pakistan. However, with that huge population (top 6 or 7 in the world) there are huge threats and risks of massacres that make the recent incident in San Bernardino look rather minor.
But it is good to see expansion of LDS members throughout all parts of the world. Pray for peace and safety for all.

  4. The new stake in Las Vegas is the Las Vegas Nevada Sky Canyon stake. It was created with 4 wards from the Elkhorn Spings stake and 2 wards and 2 branches from the Lone Mountain stake.

At the meeting creating the new Las Vegas stake, Elder Todd Hansen of the Seventy announced new stakes were being created in Tuscon AZ and Albequerque, NM in the North America Southwest Area. He called it a day of miracles and that other areas would also be getting new stakes and that it would account for 36,000 new callings in the church.

  5. As to the number of callings, here's what usually is needed:

    Per stake:

3 Stakepresidency members. high priests (may need to be ordained if not already high priests, which is the case if it's purely mission district).

Stake executive secretary and clerks (unsure on priesthood requirement)

    12 High Councilors.

One stake patriarch (may not be called at the creation of the stake, but within a reasonable amount of time thereafter), The patriarch serves in that office in the priesthood, and usually meets with the high priest group in his home ward.

    3 for each ward bishopric

1 high priest group leader in each unit as the stake president now has a quorum to be over.

Other callings, see Chapter 19, Callings in the Church, in Handbook 2. for the rest. you may be able to calculate numbers from that. In the US, it's not always new units formed at the creation of the stake, often though a bishipric member may be brought into a stake calling, etc. Overseas, they have to often ordain at least 30 high priests need to be ordained to that office if it was a mission district that is being made into a stake, but that varies based on how many wards are made from branches, etc., fewer if stakes are dividing.

  6. The Muldoon Branch (Hmong) in the Anchorage Alaska Chugach Stake is now large enough to merit it's own 3-hour block.

While this may not be huge news, but the branch is less dependent now.

  14. How many people going up to Everest die every year? With that money expended on climbing, could we build a few more churches? Water or septic tanks?

  15. This is a 'hit and run' spammer that is targeting every blog that has the word 'Nepal' or related words and names in them. I've already added this one, and the one at the top to a major web content filter as 'spam' so that some won't even see it at work or whatever down the line.

  16. I guess it would be unfair or unethical to set up a similar gimmick with the LDS faith and "church" or "Bible". That is a thought, though. Algorhythms for the restoration.

  18. I think spamming to spread the gospel would alienate more people than it would reach. The key to effectively sharing the gospel on line is authentic, meaningful posts that reflect a true caring for our fellow human beings, not just mass regurjitation of words.
