President Monson announced three new temples this morning in the following locations:
- Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire
- Bangkok, Thailand
- Port-au-Prince, Haiti
With this mornings announcement, this brings the total number of temples announced, under construction, or in operation to 173. I will provide analysis of this announcement tomorrow.
First comments: (Yes, put this in my prayer book of life...to share with a few others)
ReplyDeleteHaiti: Should be huge for the spiritual and economic well-being of this at times desperately poor nation. Fantastic. There seems to be a greater growth in French-speaking nations and peoples, including...
Cote d'Ivoire: Superbe! West Africa has grown churchwise a lot, particularly this culturally rich nation (has some 60 some distinct ethnic groups), as has been noted on this website.
Nations to the north and further west need to open up more, like Burkina Faso, Guinea, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau. Lots of non-Muslims in these lands where we have very few missionaries. This new temple should lead to greater influence and in-roads.
Bangkok: Finally! My mom and step-dad saw good Cambodian growth during their 2000-2002 Charities mission and follow ups. All of Southeast Asia will be blessed and will continue to grow.
Thanks Prez. Monson, Presiding Bishopric, temple planners, faithful tithe payers and people of good faith everywhere.
Did some quick math on the temple districts.
ReplyDeleteThe temple in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire will likely serve members in Cote d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, making a total of 8 stakes, 11 districts, leaving the Accra Ghana Temple with 15 stakes, 10 districts.
The temple in Bangkok, Thailand will likely serve members in Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam(?), making a total of 8 stakes, 27 districts, leaving the Hong Kong China Temple with 5 stakes, 6 districts.
The temple in Port-au-Prince, Haiti will likely serve members in Haiti and Jamaica, making a total of 5 stakes, 4 districts, leaving the Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple with 26 stakes, 13 districts, and the Panama City Panama Temple with 7 stakes, 4 districts.
Sorry, the Accra Ghana Temple would be left with 14 stakes, 10 districts
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about the announcement on the Haiti Port-Au-Prince temple that this could also be used by members in Cuba. I checked on flights out of Havana and one of the few countries that you can fly to is Haiti. I realize we do not have a lot of information on members or member groups in Cuba, but the blessings of the temple may be available to these members once the temple is completed. I was also thinking that there is not a country in North or South America that is now not a part of a temple district. I could be wrong, but I can't think of one.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the rate of stake and other unit growth in Liberia, Sierre Leone, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin, I suspect the stake and district numbers will be higher once the temple is completed. Sierre Leone could get another stake by then. I would not be surprised if Liberia gets a stake soon, and Ivory Coast will probably get more. For what it is worth the Detroit Temple has somewhere between 8 and 10 stakes and one district in its area of coverage.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it was until this conference that I fully appreciated why no new temples were announced the last couple years. There have been so many reasons in the history of the Church why temples couldn't be announced...lack of resources...lack of members...issues with members. This is the first time I know of where the main issue is that there is a BACKLOG of temples to be built. Amazing. Glad we have lived to see these times.
