110th Translation of the Book of Mormon Published

The Church recently announced the translation of the Book of Mormon into Kosraean. Unlike many languages which have recently had the entire Book of Mormon translated, there was no previous translation of select passages of the Book of Mormon into Kosraean. Kosraean is the 110th language into which the Church has translated the Book of Mormon. Other translations of the Book of Mormon that have been completed within the past seven years include Malay, Slovak, Serbian, and Yoruba.

A recent article on lds.org also notes that there are plans for the Church to publish three additional new translations of the Book of Mormon and five additional new translations of the triple combination (Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price). Likely candidates for a translation of the Book of Mormon include Burmese, Georgian, Kikamba, and Nepali. Likely candidates for a translation of the triple combination include Amharic, Aymara, Hindi (India), Hmong, Kiribati, Marshallese, Slovenian, Telugu, Tswana, Turkish, Xhosa, and Zulu. There also appear many languages with current translations of select passages of the Book of Mormon that are likely to have the entire Book of Mormon translated within the near future including Bengali, Cakchiquel, Chuukese, Efik, Farsi, Hiligaynon, Kuna, Mam, Maya, Navajo, Niuean, Palauan, Pampango, Papiamento, Pohnpeian, Quechua (Bolivia), Quechua (Peru), Quiche, Quichua (Ecuador), Tamil, Tzotzil, and Waray.

  1. FYI - Kosraean /koʊˈʃaɪən/, sometimes rendered Kusaiean, is the language spoken on the islands of Kosrae (Kusaie), Caroline Islands, and Nauru. In 2001 there were approximately 8,000 speakers. This is mid-Pacific Ocean area.

  2. Kosrae is one of the 4 states of the Federated States of Micronesia. The district on Kosrae (it is just one island) was created in 1990 and currently has 2 branches.

Kosrae is the 4th of the 4 major languages of the Federated States of Micronesia to have the Book of Mormon translated into it. Pohnpeian and Chuukese had the Book of Mormon translated into them in 1988, and Yapese about 11 years ago or so.

The Church's humanitarian efforts in Kosrae have led to an official thanks from the state's government. See this 2003 Church News article http://www.ldschurchnewsarchive.com/articles/44697/Kosrae-Legislature-honors-Church.html

  3. You mentioned Quichua (Ecuador) as a language with only selections of the Book of Mormon translated that is a candidate for a possible future full translation, but it got a full translation in 2011.

  4. As of December 2015 the Church has now published the full translation of the Book of Mormon in Chuukese. My son is currently serving his mission in the Chuuk islands and it has been well received.
