I have received reports that eight new missions will be created this summer in Mexico headquartered in Cancun, Chalco, Ciudad Juarez, Ciudad Obregon, Pachuca, Reynosa, Queretaro, and Saltillo. I will provide more information once it becomes available. Mexico will have 34 missions by this summer. Mission presidents in other areas of the world report that new mission creations will be formally announced this Saturday.
If anyone is aware of any additional new mission creations for this summer please comment.
That's a lot, proportionally!!!! Maybe no Visa problems make it easy to expand
ReplyDeleteThere have been recent visa problems with American missionaries serving in Mexican missions. The recent surge in Mexican members serving missions and the self-sufficiency of the Central American Area in staffing its own missionary needs has likely prompted the massive expansion of missions in Mexico to occur this summer.
ReplyDeleteChalco Mission is confirmed.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense, actually-- The church wouldn't want to over-expand and then have the drop of the surge
ReplyDeleteI think by next fall we could have at least 50% more missionaries than last October and possibly 100% more.
ReplyDeleteIn the long run, I think this change will result in about a 10% increase for the young elders but could several times the number of sisters serving. My estimates, I think, are conservative. Fewer distractions between high school and missions and young people growing up seeing more a little older going on missions. This will be particularly true for sisters, where the idea of going on a mission is somehow tied to inability to get married may finally be discarded.
Given this, I would think the long term increase could be 25-30% and thus 30% increase in missions could be expected. These missions in the next couple of years will likely average 200-250 as opposed to 140-180 previously.
Now, this isn't to say that we might see a contraction in numbers of missions in the future after the initial surge slows.
There are 347 missions right now. That means about 120 mission presidents have to be called each year. This year, we could have 200 or more mission presidents called. I don't think there would be much in terms of contraction in 2014 or 2015. Given the surge in mission presidents in 2013, 2016 will be the year when such decisions will need to be made. If say 200 are called this year, will the church call 200 in 2016?
That is awesome! The Queretaro mission used to exist. When I was there, members said the church still owned the mission presidents house and were renting it.
