New Stake Created in California

Local members residing in the Roseville and Rocklin areas report that a new stake was organized in the area today. The Lincoln California stake includes at least seven wards and one branch in Lincoln and Lomis. Prior to the creation of the new stake, the Roseville California Stake had 12 wards and the Rocklin California Stake had 13 wards and one branch. The new stake becomes the first new stake organized in California since 2007 when the Oakland California East (Tongan) Stake was created. Several stakes were discontinued in California during the 1990s and 2000s largely due to shifting Latter-day Saint populations and Californian members moving outside of the state. There are now 158 stakes in California.

  1. I am really suprised a new stake was created; as mentioned, I am sure the california membership of the LDS church was going backwards due to migration into other states (Texas?) nonetheless great to see.

My congregation has achieved 2 baptisms this month already (2 more pending). Which sounds small but its a lot in English LDS terms.

  2. I feel that luckily, this new stake isn't in the area I will be in, because then the missionaries there would have all of the fun making new stakes without me. I'm going to the California Ventura Mission starting the 16th.

  3. Does anyone know when the nearby Fair Oaks California Stake was discontinued? It's gone (combined with Carmichael), but I can't figure out when. Don't have my most recent almanacs with me (as if they were an accurate source :-) ).

  4. The Fair Oaks California Stake was organized in 1967 and renamed the Folsom California Stake which continues to operate today with nine wards.

  5. The Fair Oaks stake was dissolved between 2006 and 2008. All but three wards were dissolved into Folsom Stake, with the three wards moving to Carmichael Stake.

  6. It shouldn't be too suprising, when I first moved to Lincoln as a child it only had 4,000 people in the city. IN 1998 it only had 8,000, today it has around 40,000. A lot of the members that moved from the other stakes that didn't go to other states moved there because of the more conservative environment and for a time, the real estate was less expensive than say, the Bay Area.

I thought it would happen 8 years ago. Glad it finally has happened.
