For the past several months David Stewart and I have been developing an international almanac that details LDS Church growth in countries around the world, exploring the Church's history in these nations and opportunities and challenges for future growth. The almanac will not be completed until mid-2011 and in addition to being printed into a book, David Stewart will provide the profiles online at his site,
Cumorah.com. Two profiles have already been posted for Angola and Bangladesh.
I am really excited for this project to continue, although I am concerned the Cumorah.com site is really horrific to navigate. The website needs a serious facelift and/or redesign to be functional, in my opinion. I do web design but don't have time.
ReplyDeleteBut anyhow, awesome work guys.
Hurray! Cumorah.com is back!
ReplyDeleteWill it contains the name of the units in each stake worldwide?
ReplyDeleteNo it will not. Recreating an LDS Atlas is something I'd want to work on when I have more time however.
ReplyDeleteTo Isawan:
ReplyDeleteYou can find the names of the units in each stake worldwide as of the early 90s by going to Cumorah.com and searching in the atlas of stakes. For the most part it will be quite accurate, although there have been new wards, branches, and new stakes added since then, as well as some that have been merged or discontinued.
To Isawan:
ReplyDeleteCorrection--stake info is up to the early 2000s, not early 90s. Sorry! In Cumorah.com search under "International atlas of stakes, temples, missions," and you will find the info on all stakes, districts, etc. worldwide.
The March Ensign is reporting Church membership at 13,750,651 members through Sept. 30, 2009. At this rate of increase, the yearend membership total to be reported in April Conference should be about 13,831,365.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting us all know about the end of September 2009 membership totals in the Ensign. Growth rates have almost always been more rapid for the last three months of the year versus the first nine month so we should see a little bit more of an increase that what you're projecting. Sounds like the Church last year grew around 325,000 members - the same increase reported for 2007. Percentage growth hasn't changed from most years in the 2000s likely around 2.4%.
ReplyDeleteCool blog, I like statistics!

ReplyDeleteThe Country Reports are fantastic Matt, I can't say enough good about them. They combine Church history and progress with a great deal of cultural context to give a detailed and thorough analysis of challenges to future growth. I've learned a lot reading several entries, and they are very thought provoking. I remember what the Cumorah.com site looked like almost a decade ago, and I think what has been done really fufills the original vision of the site and then some. I hope that the information that comes out on this blog (and in current news events) will be used at least annually to update the Cumorah site, its a great and timely resource for anyone interested in the worldwide Church. Keep up the great work!
