A new stake was created in Arizona last Sunday. The Surprise Arizona Stake was divided and a new stake was created. The Surprise Arizona Stake was created from the Peoria Arizona North Stake with seven wards and one branch at the beginning of 2005. Since then the stake has grown to 12 wards and two branches. I have not been able to get the name for the new stake and as of yet do not know how many congregations are in the new stake. Feel free to leave a comment if you know the name of the new stake created. I will provide it as a comment once it becomes available.
I spoke with one of the bishops in the El Mirage wards today, and he told me that the name of the new stake is the Surprise Arizona North Stake. I wasn't able to find out which wards are part of the new stake though, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteThis makes 2 new stakes in AZ this year, along with Sahuarita, about as month ago. There were 2 in 2008 and 3 in 2007.
ReplyDeleteI believe this new stake in Az is #2850. So far this year there are 8 new US stakes and 1 discontinued US stake. There are 8 new Mexican stakes, 4 new ones in Brazil, 2 in Peru and Nicaragua, and one each in Africa (Dem. Rep. of Congo), Trinidad, Mongolia, Ecuador, Colombia, The Philippines, and Majuro Islands. If I missed any please let me know.
ReplyDeleteThe Tifton Georgia stake formed from the realigned remnants of the Albany and Douglas stakes. Officially the Albany stake was discontinued, but the new Tifton stake has ten wards and a branch. This is the result of about two months of meetings where neighboring stakes have had meetings that transferred units to the Columbus, Dothan, Savannah, and Tallahassee stakes.
ReplyDeleteShould not all U.S. and Canada church information be on your other blog?
ReplyDeleteHey Andrew,
ReplyDeleteGet a life.
Every time I see you comment on here it is to criticize something Matt did or did not write. I think he is doing an excellent job with this blog. It is very informative.
Keep up the good work Matt.
Eric.
The Surprise Arizona North Stake includes the Kingswood Park Ward, Sierra MontaƱa Ward, Sun City West Ward, Sun Valley Ward, Wickenburg Ward, Willow Canyon Ward, and Wenden Branch.
ReplyDeleteIf, as posted by The Chatelain's, the Albany and Douglas Georgia stakes have been merged into neighboring stakes and the new Tifton Georgia stake has been created in their place, then the new Ariz. stake will be #2749 and there are 8 new and 2 dissolved stakes in the US this year so far.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I have never meant to criticize this blog in any way. I absolutly love this blog and I check it every day. I promise that I will not insist that there should be a change again. Also I want to make sure that my comments will not be pessamistic in any way. I just wanted everything to be organized and accurate-that is abviously up to Matt. I am very sorry if I have offended anyone by the comments I have posted on this blog. Matt should be able to do whatever he wants with this blog.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the comments and suggestions. I am glad that my blog has been something which has interested all of you. Let's keep the conversation positive and relating to Church growth and demographics.
ReplyDeleteSo... is there a reason that the Growth in the US blog hasn't been updated with this information, or at all in the past 5 months? Not criticizing, just wondering if you weren't going to update it anymore.
ReplyDeleteThe United States and Canada LDS Church Growth blog is primarily dedicated to providing changes in wards and branches in both countries. I have occasionally provided some other posts about different aspects of growth or missionary work in both countries. I usually provide a new list of changes in wards and branches about once a month.
ReplyDeleteI include new stakes created in the US and Canada on the main LDS Church Growth blog because they are more significant than new congregations created. Also since more users view the main LDS Church Growth site I figured it would be best to includes these here.
Let me know if you have any suggestions for topics to discuss on the US and Canada blog.
Matt, have you made a list recently of the largest stakes or districts in the US and Canada that are likely to be divided or become stakes? Also have you made a list of stakes likely to be discontinued? And thanks for the August report on new congregations and wards and branches closed. We appreciate your work.
ReplyDeleteI will post an updated list of stakes likely to split in the coming week or so. I have made a list of likely districts to be discontinued, but I do not have one for stakes. Stakes are much more difficult to predict since we do not know how large each congregation in every stake is. It is much easier to predict which stakes will be divided to create new stakes.
ReplyDeleteLooking thru old posts from Apr. and Jan. 08 I see you listed several stakes likely to be divided and that so far 15 you predicted have been created. I'm sure several more on your lists will be created in the near future.
