Three Member Groups Organized in Juba, South Sudan

In the past few weeks, the Uganda Kampala Mission has organized three member groups in Juba, South Sudan, where the Juba Branch was reinstated earlier this year. The member groups are the Jebel, New-Site, and Shirkat Groups. Last Sunday, the groups had a combined attendance of approximately 80 people - nearly half of whom attended the Juba Branch. This marks the first time that the Church has operated multiple congregations in Juba. Member groups had previously functioned in a couple cities outside of Juba in the early 2010s, although these groups may not function anymore (such as in Akobo) or were never official member groups (like in Nyamliell). The creation of the member groups is a major development that has good potential to expand outreach and establish a center of strength for the Church in Juba. However, the unstable political situation in South Sudan poses a major barrier for the success of these fledgling member groups. Moreover, some countries where a similar approach to expansion has been pursued where only one branch operates in the capital city, most notably Mali, have had significant challenges and delays with member groups maturing into their own independent branches. It is unclear whether mission leaders have made efforts yet to establish member groups outside of Juba yet. Moreover, full-time proselytizing missionaries do not appear to have been assigned to Juba, and this may result in difficulties with these member groups growing in the near future.

Out of topic.

“Now, with 367 temples around the world, members of the Church have circumstances that are going to allow them to attend the temple. When those temples are completed, 95% of the members of the Church will live within 2 hours or 200km of the temple.", said Elder Stevenson.

Looking at a map, Jebel appears to be the southern portion of Juba, New-Site appears to be to in the north of the city, while Shirkat was harder to find, it seems to be across the White Nile.

This development is encouraging. However sending full-time missionaries to Juba would help. On the other hand Luputa managed to reach stake status without ever having had full-time missionaries. To understand Luputa you have to understand anti-Kasaian violence in the early 1990s. A group of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were driven from Kolwezi by the violence. Some of these people later served in Luputa as district missionaries, devoting 3 days a work to missionary work and farming the other days.

I hope things pick up soon in both Mali and South Sudan.

The locations of the giving machines for this year were released.

The locations went from 61 to 106.

There are a few places lost. Iowa seems to not have a giving machine this year. Also Coban, Guatemala.

The number of countries went from 6 to 12.

Michigan is going from 0 to 3 locations. I believe there was a new gain of 5 states with giving machines.

Totally new countries are China (Hong Kong), Kenya, El Salvador, Honduras and Panama. South America property is lacking from the list. England is back, it last had a giving machine in 2019.

New states are Alaska with 2 locations, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Michigan, Connecticut, and Vermont. Mexico has the sane 6 locations, basically 6 of the 7 locations in the greater Mexico City area (Benemeito is the only one not having one, I have no idea how close thry are to the temples).

The Phillippines have Manila and Cebu City again and Davao added.

All things considered I am shocked that several of the countries in Central America have one at all. I think it is a good thing. On the other hand I would have though Continental Europe would be a good choice.

Here in Michigan we have Detroit, Midland and Grand Rapids. Detroit is actually in the city of Detroit. It is located adjacent to Campus Martius in the heart of downtown Detroit. About 4 blocks from where Hyrum Smith and John Murdock first preached the gospel in Michigan. We have never had a church unit meet nearly that far downtown. There are a whole set of Christmas themed activities that happen on and around campus Martius so it is a good place to have a giving machine.

Ohio is going from 1 to 2 locations. Texas from 5 to 8. Arizona is adding a location. Utah is going from 2 to 5. Before it was Salt Lake City and Orem. Now Logan, Ogden and St. George are added. Arizona is getting at least one more location.

California is going from 4 to 5. Oregon and Washingtom are each going from 1 to 2. Nevada is going from a location in Las Vegas (Summerlin area on the west side of the city, closer to the Lone Mountain than the Las Vegas Temple) and a location in Henderson to also having Reno and Elko. Elko surprises me.

I think there are about 15 states not covered. Florida only has Orlando and St. Augustin. So some large metro areas like San Francisco and Miami have no giving machine. The Bos-Wash corridor has 8 or 9 locations (depending on how you count Richmond.

If you look the other side of the Appachinas you have a lot of potential to grow. Sharon, Vermont makes me wonder if Palmyra might be a doable location, or Rochester. New York. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and such are missing

There is reason to not grow too fast. There really needs yo be a critical mass of people to pull this off.

I am wondering if they will publish more site details.

New Zealand went from 1 to 4 locations.

Recently, two new branches were created in the Narra Philippines District, located in Palawan Province (under the Philippines Manila Mission). These are the Narra 2nd Branch and the Kamuning Branch (formerly part of the Aborlan Branch).

Additionally, two new branches were organized from the Quezon Branch and the Brookes Point Branch, part of the Quezon Philippines Palawan District (also under the Philippines Manila Mission). These new branches are the Quezon 2nd Branch and the Brookes Point 2nd Branch.

Puerto Princepesa Phillippines Stake is probably the stake in the country where it would cost members the most to go to a temple. With 1 stake and 2 districts on the island in theory it could get a temple. If they could get a second stake it would seem more likely.

Evidently it is 13 countries and 32 states that will have giving machines.

In Texas both metro Houston and metro Dallas have 3 giving machine locations. In Houston it is Houston, Sugarland and the Woodlands. This makes me wonder how likely it is that Houston could get a 3rd temple.

I am surprised that they are not making a return to Iowa this year. Our stake had indicated that the Des Moines location had the single best day of the Midwest tour and overall did about as well as the Chicago location.
