New Temple Predictions - March 2024 Edition

I have updated my temple prediction map in preparation for General Conference in April. The size of the Church in a specific geographical area (i.e. number of stakes and districts, the number of wards and branches), the age of the oldest stake in a specific geographical area, church growth trends, the distance to the nearest temple, traffic/transportation, the square-footage of the nearest temple, the historical number of weekly endowment sessions scheduled at the nearest temple, and member and missionary reports regarding member activity, temple attendance, and convert retention are variables used to identify prospective sites for future temple announcements. Altogether, there are 208 potential temples on the map (which is 8 potential temple site less than the total number of potential sites identified in September 2023). The following 12 locations have been added to the temples prediction map with this current update - all of which are less likely temples:

  • Butuan, Philippines
  • Daejeon, Korea
  • Gaborone, Botswana
  • Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Huntsville, Alabama
  • Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Nagoya, Japan
  • Portoviejo, Ecuador
  • Pretoria, South Africa
  • Pucallpa, Peru
  • Sagay, Philippines
  • Warri, Nigeria

Also, there were five locations that were moved from the less likely to be announced list to the more likely to be announced list. These locations included:

  • Glasgow, Scotland OR Edinburgh, Scotland (the largest number of stakes without a nearby temple in Europe)
  • Maputo, Mozambique (third stake recently organized, long distance to the nearest temples in Beira, Mozambique and Johannesburg, South Africa)
  • Osorno, Chile (increases in the number of wards in the area, long distance from Concepcion, Chile)
  • San Pablo City, Philippines (closest temple is the Alabang Philippines Temple, few other locations in the Philippines with as many stakes to be serviced by a temple)
  • Yamoussoukro, Cote d'Ivoire (steady, rapid growth in the number of stakes in central and northern Cote d'Ivoire).

In my opinion, the following 10 locations appear most likely to have temples announced this coming General Conference. As always, your prediction lists are welcome and encouraged.

  1. Spanish Fork, Utah
  2. Angeles or Olongapo, Philippines
  3. Kampala, Uganda
  4. São José, Brazil
  5. Santiago, Dominican Republic
  6. Maracaibo, Venezuela
  7. Osorno, Chile OR Puerto Montt, Chile
  8. El Paso, Texas
  9. Price, Utah
  10. Bo, Sierra Leone

See below for the map of likely and less likely new temple sites:

I also heard from a friend in his stake a large increase in endowed members and temple attendance due to the change in recommend interview questions due the phrase "Are you striving to?"

Pascal Friedmann I lived in Springfield for a time and I 100% agree with your assessment of the situation in downstate IL. One of the most supportive wards I've ever been in. But the demographics of the area, with a declining population and few jobs, cause many to look for other opportunities. It seemed like every couple of months a great family would move in, but the ward never got bigger because people also moved out at an equal if not higher rate.

I just realized rltoday that half of US states have had 2 temples announced, and a third, well 17 to be exact a third is 16 and one third, have had 3 temples announced. It is not a quarter with 4 temples announced though.

Rich here.

I had made mention of this six months ago and I am doing so again today. I find it interesting that since Pres. Nelson became the prophet, he has not announced any new temples in the state of Arizona.

Arizona and Idaho have almost the same number of members and stakes (400k, 120). Idaho has nine temples operating, under construction or announced. Arizona only has six. Idaho has had three temples announced since 2018. Arizona has had none.

I do think Arizona is overdue for some new temples to be announced. I see Flagstaff, Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Prescott Valley and Surprise / Goodyear mentioned frequently as potential locations from those who post predictions.

I also think that Flagstaff, Queen Creek, Prescott Valley are very likely locations in 2024. With the strong growth of the church and overall population in Surprise and San Tan Valley, those two areas could be announced in the next three years or so.

I also see at least two more temples being announced in Idaho in the next three years; Blackfoot and Nampa.

For comparison purposes, here is a basic breakdown of temples announced by Pres. Nelson in western US states (excluding Utah):

California (5)

Feather River 10/18
Yorba Linda 4/21
Modesto 4/22
Bakersfield 4/23
San Jose 4/23

Texas (4)

McAllen 10/19

Austin 04/22
McKinney 10/22

Washington (3)

Encouragement for 18 year old women to receive their endowment after high school last night at the RS Broadcast. Excited for my daughter who turned 18 last month and is heading to BYU in the fall. So different from when I was in her position 30 years ago.
Rooting for El Paso to get a temple. Have met people from there coming all the way to McAllen to attend the temple. Plenty of people from Reynosa attend the McAllen temple, but many others cannot.

John Pack Lambert said...

So I guess the all people who are 18 and past high school getting endowed is not an area thing. It is a worldwide Church thing. It is a day of Zion.

Cody,

Northern Arizona is on my "other 40" list although probably not far off of my top 20. I think Flagstaff is the most likely candidate with getting a new temple in Northern Arizona with likely 7 existing stakes in its temple district. However, here's what didn't cause it to be in my top 20:
- being only two hours from two temples
- not much of a time saver for most stakes that would be in its temple district, with 3 or 4 stakes saving one or more hours of travel.

I think Flagstaff will be on my top 20 if it gets another stake within the temple district or easily within the next couple of years if the rate of announcements continues.

I posted my predictions regarding temple announcements a couple of weeks ago. Recently I decided to try a new approach. I am curious to see which of the two approaches performs better when conference comes. The predictions under my new approach are listed below, noting that I listed 22 rather than 20 because 2 of them are in Venezuela, and while I am confident they will happen the moment the political situation in Venezuela permits, I have no idea when that will be. They are, in order:

Lehi, Utah
Rivera, Uruguay
Osorno, Chile
Maracaibo, Venezuela*
Oquirrh, Utah (yes, I know there is an Oquirrh Mountain temple)
Olongapo, Philippines
Resistencia, Argentina
Santiago de Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic
Springville, Utah
Tacna, Peru
Poza Rica, Mexico
Rosario, Argentina
Barcelona, Venezuela*
Aracatuba, Brazil
Onitsha, Nigeria
Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast
Lome, Togo
Cincinnati, Ohio
Comas, Peru
Quevedo, Ecuador
Kampala, Uganda
Chihuahua, Mexico

Hello everyone,

My guesses aim at the Brazil area. I am confident that we might see a surge of smaller temples (10k, 14k and 20k sqft) in larger urban areas - even second temples in some capital cities:

- Sorocaba (5 stakes - this is a really mature area for a temple; I could say that the Ribeirão Preto temple could've been alternatively announced to Sorocaba)
- Piracicaba (the metro area covers 3 (potentially 4) stakes, along with the São Carlos stake, and close to 1M people - if Limeira becomes strong enough to split from the Piracicaba Rezende stake). That would be a less likely temple, but I would not be surprised if the Church annouces Piracicaba in the next 5 years;
- Cuiabá (2 stakes, but it is fair to say that Cuiabá is to west central Brazil what Winnipeg is to Manitoba) - although such announcement would put a halt on plans for a temple in either Rio Branco or Campo Grande;
- Araçatuba (western São Paulo state would greatly benefit from a temple);
- São José/Florianópolis
- Santa Maria
- Fortaleza 2nd
- Palmas (covering Tocantins and western Bahia)
- RJ metro (Nova Iguaçu)
- Foz do Iguaçu/Chapecó

Further, a temple in Morgan is likely to be the next announced for Utah.

I know some (or most) of the locations are far-fetched guesses, but since the Church seems to be shifting the temple approach from "strong membership areas get a temple" to "areas that need strength get a temple", we might see some miracles happening soon.

Honolulu Hawaii is not only less likely, but nonsensical. The Laie temple is a lovely 20-30 minute drive from most of O'ahu. Far more likely they'll chose Kauai or Maui so less people need to fly.

I hear from multiple sources who are in the know, that the number of new temples will be north of 25.

For what it’s worth about a Champaign Illinois temple, my mom told me that the Springfield Illinois and Peoria Illinois Stakes were both previously part of the Champaign Illinois Stake. In terms of church strength, I think Champaign makes the most sense. In terms of location, I think the lot the stake center is built on is probably large enough for a small temple and a stake center, though the stake center would need to be rebuilt (the setback from the street of the existing stake center building would need to be reduced, and maybe some sort of underground parking structure would need to be built). Champaign makes a lot of sense because of the number of units in the immediate vicinity and because it hosts a stake (unlike Bloomington), and travel to the temple from Springfield and Peoria would be pretty easy even in winter (typically the freeways are clear before secondary roads, and Champaign is accessible from Springfield using I-72 and from Peoria using I-74).

Personally, I’m really coming around to the idea of a temple in Champaign. It makes the most sense for the next temple in Illinois, in my opinion, and, while I’ve liked the idea for a while, it seemed fairly far fetched to me. Now, honestly, I do think it’s more likely. It really does seem like the church is trying to put a greater emphasis on temple availability. The Lima Peru Los Olivos Temple is about the size of a Wasatch Front temple, and the church has proven willing to build temples in places served only by a single stake if distances and travel difficulties are too great.

Personally, I think any metro area with three or more stakes that doesn’t have its own temple is very likely, especially if it’s an area that can take a few stakes from outside of the metro area or is a considerable distance from the nearest temple. As for areas like Mississippi or Central Illinois, where three stakes cover a wide geographic area, I’m not so sure how the church would approach building temples in those areas. I do think, though, that three stakes per temple is probably the minimum unless there are considerable distances involved. And, outside of specialty cases like mainland China or Pakistan, I doubt the church will build many temples in areas only served by districts. For instance, St Johns, NL makes a lot of sense due to its distance from Halifax, NS, but I don’t really see the church building a temple there until the Newfoundland and Labrador District develops into a stake.

James,

How are you able to anticipate church news announcements like that ?

James G. Stokes said...

I use patterns of the past to project the future. The 2:00 PM hour Monday here in Utah had been the standard window in which the Church announces major temple updates. And I have several files of data from over two decades that can inform what I anticipate.
