Five New Temples Announced

At the opening remarks of the 179th Semiannual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, President Monson announced the construction of five new temples in the following locations:
  1. Brigham City, Utah
  2. Concepcion, Chile
  3. Fortaleza, Brazil
  4. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  5. Sapporo, Japan
With the announcement of the five new temples, this brings the total of temples announced, under construction, or in operation to 151.

The Brigham City Utah Temple will likely serve members living in about 10 stakes in the area around Brigham City. The Concepcion Chile Temple, which becomes the second temple in Chile, will likely serve members living in 18 stakes and 10 districts in southern Chile. The new temple announcement likely indicates a strengthening of the membership of the Church in Chile.

The Fortaleza Brazil Temple will likely serve members in 18 stakes and two districts in northeastern Brazil. Fortaleza was the city in the world with the most stakes without a temple prior to the new temple announcement. This brings the total of temples in Brazil to seven.

The Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple will likely serve members of the Church in southern Florida in around seven stakes. The new temple will be the second in the state and 72nd in the United States. Members of the Church in areas of southern Florida reported several months ago of a special fast for a temple in southern Florida.

Lastly the Sapporo Japan Temple will likely serve members of the Church on the northernmost island of Hokkaido in three stakes and at least one district.

Temple districts are usually announced prior to the temple's dedication. The above predictions are not authoritative.

  2. As for the future Sapporo Temple District, I wouldn't be surprised if the temple distrct included not only the island of Hokkaido but also the Touhoku region of the Northern Part of Honshu as well.

So that means, Sendai Stake, Aamori District, Morioka District, and maybe Niigata District could also be included in the district.

Vladivostok Russia District could also be included too

That means in total the Sapporo District could have 4 Stakes and 4 Districts.

  4. Several months ago I sent you a message asking what you might rate the possibility of temple in the Brigham City area. I figure it would take some stakes from the Ogden temple asw ell as at least one from the Logan temple districts (Tremonton) and maybe a stake or two from the Idaho Falls district( McCammon& Menan Idaho) would be closer to Brigham City. My figures are based on miles driven between cities.

  5. I remember in a mormon channel interview with the mission president of the sapporo mission that the saints there were seriously praying for a temple. They may be small in number but they sure are strong in spirit. As for the other temples, I did not expect a temple to be announced in Brigham city or Fort Lauderdale. It also seems like Chile has gone out of a grim decade church-wise (compared to the 80's and 90"s). I wonder if any new stakes will be created in Chile within the next few year. I don't think there has been any new stakes created there within the last 10 years.

  6. Yes, quite a surprise today. I know you and others have mooted the possibility of temples in Layton and Payson. I think a Layton temple would be unlikely now given the announcement of Brigham City.

I expected to hear more information forthcoming about the Bluffdale area temple. Perhaps Sunday, or perhaps there are still some issues that need to be worked out before more information can come.

  7. Matt,
Do you know if is there any new ward or branch created in Chile in this past two years?

The so-called Bluffdale area temple will most likely not happen until the other area temples are operating at capacity. I think Draper, Oquirrh Mountain, and Jordan River need to be 'busting at the seams' before we hear more about another temple in the area.
