New Temple Announced for Otavalo, Ecuador

This evening, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced plans to construct a new temple in Otavalo, Ecuador. The new temple will be the Church's third temple in Ecuador following temples in Guayaquil (dedicated in 1999) and Quito (dedicated in 2022). With 279,046 members as of year-end 2025, Ecuador ranks as the country with the 10th most Latter-day Saints worldwide and previously had more members per temple than any other country with only two temples. There are currently 45 stakes and five districts in Ecuador. As of year-end 2025, there were 338 official congregations and seven missions.

Otavalo has had a longstanding reputation for relatively high member activity rates, mature local leadership, and an unusually high percentage of Latter-day Saints in the general population (estimated at 10% in the early 2010s). The Otavalo people have been uniquely receptive to the Latter-day Saint missionary efforts since the earliest days of the Church in Ecuador. In fact, the first branch of the Church in Ecuador was organized in Otavalo in the 1960s. More historical information on the Church in Otavalo can be found here. The new temple will likely serve five stakes and one district. There are three stakes in Otavalo and one nearby stake organized earlier this year in Ibarra. One stake and one district that will likely be included in the temple district are in southern Colombia.

There are now 385 temples planned, under construction, or dedicated. There have now been two temples announced in 2026, with the first temple announcement for Marysville, Washington.

  1. This one surprised me. I thought they'd be announcing new temples on Sundays. Also, I was surprised by the location because I didn't know there were enough members in Otavalo for a temple. My first pick for a new temple in Ecuador would have been Quevedo, or a second temple in Guayaquil. It's a very pleasant evening surprise.

    1. Yesterday (Thursday) was an important holiday in much of the predominantly Catholic world, although that's not the case for Ecuador (based on a quick Google search). That *could* have explained why a devotional was scheduled for that day and not a Sunday.

      Delete
    2. Elder Renlund was in attendance at this devotional which he means he is likely visiting other areas in the country and maybe other nearby countries too with the other general authorities, so devotionals/meetings will happen any day based on when he is in a certain city. Thursday happened to be the day they were in Otavalo.

    3. This was still done during a meeting. Under President Monson, some temples were announced via letter from the first presidency.

Demographically, this didn't make since to me. The size of the church (five 5-ward stakes) and the distance to the nearest temple (less than 2 hours) didn't make this a high contender on my list.

However, looking at reservations, the Quito Temple gets booked out for several weeks, and this split cuts 1.75 hour commute for 5 of its stakes and a district. Guayaquil Ecuador Temple is also a well used temple, so this is probably not the last for Ecuador.

For a few reasons, I've excluded temple attendance from my prediction calculations. The main reason is that it would require I take the time to view usage in all temples. I did try sampling endowment attendance on a weekend in February. This brings up a secondary reason, most well used temples already had announced temples within their district. As more temples are dedicated, usage will also become clear.

Neither Boston or Seattle Temple was being used to capacity prior to announcement of Portland ME and Arlington WA respectively. These two announcements was clearly to get members closer to the temple rather than capacity. Also, Seattle's district was already being split in half by Tacoma's announcement prior to Arlington, leaving the Seattle Temple district a quarter of the size once these temples are complete.

  2. This came as a surprise to me in two ways. First, I was under the impression that they'd be announcing new temples on Sundays, but I'm happy about this. Also, I was surprised to see it's in Otavalo, because I didn't know there were so many church members there; I would've guessed Quevedo or a second temple for Guayaquil. Happy to see it though.

  3. They seem pretty close together with about 60 miles to Quito, with a travel time of around 1hr45m. Others will be announced!

  4. This was on my 3rd group of 60. Which would make it ranked 121 to 180. However, if I had ranked it it would have been on the higher end of this category. Still, like others, I had considered this the 3rd most likely location to be announced in Ecuador, behind Quevedo and Machala.

Otavalo has 4 stakes and a district. However, I thought it to be minimally sized stakes as there's no more than five wards in each stake with the 6 branches being in the district. This is also only 1.75 hours from the Quito Temple and in Latin America which is why I rated it lower than the others (certain areas of the world historically seemed to get temples easier than others).

  5. So far announcements under president Oaks:
    1 Top 20 (Ranked 1-20) 33%
    1 Somewhat Likely 40 (Ranked 21-60) 33%
    0 2nd group of 60 (Ranked 61-120) 0%
    1 3rd group of 60 (Ranked 121-180) 33%
    0 Unpredicted.

    In other words,
    33% Top 20
    67% Top 60
Historically, I considered it a good prediction if 1/3 is on my top 20 and 1/2 comes from my top two groups that make my top 60.

2 temples have been announced during this 6-month period (I predicted 1-5), with 3.5 months left in this period which is March 1 to September 1 (since I've historically made my predictions about a month before conference).

I'm not updating predictions on my map until September 1 (plus/minus 1 week) when the 6-month mark . However, I'll continue to update stakes/districts, construction status of temples announced before March 1, etc.).

  6. Are beards slowly becoming more acceptable or am I just noticing it? I've encountered multiple Bishops/Branch Presidents/High Council over the past 10 years or so with facial hair such as beards and goatees. I have yet to see it on stake presidency members or General or Area Authorities. Still the far minority, but I don't recall seeing them on local leadership 20+ years ago.

Professionally, this is becoming more acceptable over the past few decades - especially if it's well-groomed or trimmed. Beards are warn by the vice president, various members of congress, lawyers, etc. It's still the minority, but a growing trend. About a third of my professional coworkers have beards.

  7. I was very much expecting a temple in Otavalo. I have a friend who served in the Quito mission and he mentioned to me once many of the strongest church members were in Otavalo.

1 hour and 45 minutes drive may not seem much. It is a lot if you just have a donkey. Or live up in the hills and have to go back and forth on narrow roads for a while just to get down into Otavalo.

I was surprised by the announcement n8t being on a Sundwy. However since Apostles generally hold devotionals on other days of the week this does not surprise me. The goal seems to be to hold it in a well attendee local meeting. Most of these will be on Sunday, but some will be other days of the week.

Otavalo has the highest number of stakes in such a small geographic area outside Quito or Guyaquil.

There is also the relative cost to get to the temple. Many members in Otavalo lack cars and many have low incomes. Taking your donkey, if you even have one, all the way to Quito Temple is a long and hard journey.

Taking a bus is an option. It is not an easy one based on the income level of many in Otavalo.

The goal is to make temple worship a regular part of as many members lives as possible. Otavalo Temple gives that to a people for whom regular temple worship is rare, and on a scale no other new temple in Ecuador would. Some locations would be more dramatic in reducing travel distances for dome, but thry would not put as many close to a temple.

That said, I do hope Ecuador gets more new temples announced soon. I also am hoping we see additional announcements in the near future.

  8. Every few months I like to ask on hear for an update from NW Arkansas. Last I heard the new building in the Centerton Stake was caught up in permitting (wiring?) issues but was otherwise close to opening. As those following this area know, the four meetinghouses in the Centerton-Bentonville-Rogers area have 5 units attending each, with one additional ward traveling to SW Missouri. So I am again posting wondering if there's more recent info.

    1. Centerton Arkansas grew so fast (#1 in Arkansas and Top 50 this past year in net growth) that they don't have the city infrastructure capacity to connect more structures to wastewater and sewer, so they straight up won't allow already constructed buildings to turn it on, even when the church and developers had the all necessary permits and permissions to begin building. So new neighborhoods are sitting empty, as well as many buildings like the church. Lawsuits have begun, not sure if the church filed one or not. Either way, developers are flocking to other areas, and Pea Ridge is approving a ton of new developments as they have adequately planned for the growth, at least as far as water and sewage is concerned. Developers are also slowing growth a little bit due to interest rates and demand, they are having to rent out a lot more of the homes finished than they expected.

Take it for what it's worth, but I heard that it will open in the next few months and a big reshuffling will happen with who is going where to church. They are still moving dirt in Pea Ridge but we are hoping it'll open next year. The building is for a stake center, but not sure it'll become a new stake on the books at opening. There will be three wards housed there (Sugar Creek, Pea Ridge, and Beaver Lake) unless more are created in the interim. The Pinnacle Hills (Rogers/Cave Springs) chapel should always be a month or two ahead of the Pea Ridge one as they are compounding bids to catch savings.

  9. This was the first temple announced by President Oaks to fall within my top 30 prospective locations (and, in fact, the first to fall in my top 80). I've had Otavalo on my top 30 for a while because it is a remote, dense concentration of strong members with a lot of history in the Church dating back to the earliest days of the Church's growth in South America. It's really exciting to see this announcement.

  11. Fantastic about the Otavalo Temple! The blossoming of the Lamanites will happen, sooner or later, as the Book of Mormon proclaims. Some believe that the Filipinos, Polynesians, and many Latinos are part of the descendants of the remnants of these houses of Israel, which have strong components of Manasseh, but also Ephraim, Judah, and Benjamin.
We all look forward to uniting in Christ and through the Lord at His holy temples, from every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. Any news of converts among the Shuar of Ecuador? A different type of folks, from what I know.

  12. I was curious so I looked up these places. My maps show a town called Sipsey in the vicinity of Birmingham- wouldn't the new stake have taken units from the Birmingham stake? Or are there two places called Sipsey in Alabama?

    1. Sipsey is part of the Jasper Branch (49115) (nearby) in the Tuscaloosa Alabama stake. Located northwest od Birmingham.

    2. It’s a mystery why the new stake is named the Sipsey Alabama stake. As you just mentioned, Sipsey is a good distance from the majority of the units that will make up the Stake. The units that comprise the stake are located in Decatur, Athens, Cullman, Florence, Russellville, and Hayleyville. Perhaps the name is just a placeholder until the location for the stake center is determined.

      Delete
    3. The Sipsey Wilderness is a designated wilderness area within the Bankhead National Forest in northwest Alabama that is almost in the center of the new stake boundaries. It may likely be named after that, rather than the town of Sipsey which is further south like you mentioned.

    4. It would be interesting to see how this gets divided. These aren't stakes with 12+ units prior to division. If it is what it seems, this stake creation would move the Alabama portion of the Tupelo Stake away from the Arkansas Little Rock Mission and Memphis Temple District and towards the Alabama Birmingham Mission and Temple District.

  18. I saw a post on Facebook today regarding the Otavalo Temple. I don't know of it's accuracy or if it's folklore, but someone quoted or paraphrased the following:

" The first Otavalo patriarch said: "I had a dream that, in the highlands of Otavalo, a temple was being built; and I testify that so it shall be."
And the second patriarch (Castañeda) said: "Yes! A temple will be built—I know it—right here in Otavalo. However, only our children will see it; I myself will not see it, but our children surely will. We need only be prepared."

  25. Some significant informations has recently come to light from the southern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
The São Lourenço do Sul District and the Bage Stake have been discontinued, and the units have been redirected, along with the wards of the two stakes in the city of Pelotas, which have been reconfigured, and the third Pelotas Stake has been created, resulting in the following configuration:
Pelotas Brazil Stake - 5 units
Pelotas Brazil North Stake - 5 units
Pelotas Brazil West Stake - 6 units
This reconfiguration of wards and branches seems quite confusing at first without additional information. Bagé is 125 miles from Pelotas and previously had 5 wards. The São Lourenço district had 3 branches, and the São Lourenço Branch appears to have been discontinued. Regarding the two previous Pelotas stakes, it is interesting to note that the Pelotas stake center remains at the same address, but the only ward that uses that chapel has been assigned to the Pelotas North Stake.
Does anyone else have any information about this realignment?

    2. What makes this change difficult to understand is the geography involved.

Pelotas West is apparently being formed with 2–3 wards in its core, while Bagé itself is now down to around two wards. If that’s the case, why not reorganize it as a district? Bagé and Pelotas are about 2.5 hours apart by car, which seems like a real challenge for leadership meetings, stake activities, youth events, and member participation.

I understand that districts create more work for the for the Mission President. But then I wonder if the solution is simply shifting that burden to a stake president and local leaders, who absorb a lot of the personal time and travel costs themselves.

It makes me wonder whether preserving stakes net numbers played a role in the decision, even if the final arrangement seems harder to sustain in practical terms. We’ll probably never know.

      Delete
    3. @Dave MB Maybe they where told that Pelotas could get a temple if they have 3 stakes in the city. There are many stakes with long distances. Leadership meetings / interviews are there often done online. But yes it is a big challenge for youth events. When my stake was split the stake presidentcy hoped for shorter distances, but the opposite happend. In order for the stake to split 2 other stakes had to be involved and travel distance to the branch furthest away nearly doubled.

  32. I know this isn’t church growth related. But I think it may get at some of the issues we face all see with large numbers of members going less active.

I overheard this when I was visiting another ward today.
I don’t know what’s the story or the full conversation. But a brother was taking to a member of the bishopric about how he feels that no one in the ward cares for him or his family, and that he wish that ward leadership would get more involved with building a ward family . And the bishopric member told him that it’s not the ward’s responsibility to take care of his needs.
This has been all I can think about today I wish I had reached out to this brother. I hope he knows I care.

I was thinking about the experience you shared, and coincidentally saw this quote from Elder Causse's last conference talk (on the back of our ward program):

“Though He was often surrounded by multitudes, the Savior always gave His full attention to the one—one sheep, one leper, one Samaritan woman, one little child, one soul at a time. In His love, no one was ever lost in the crowd.

Likewise, in the Church of Jesus Christ, there should be no anonymity. As we enter the fold of Christ through sacred covenants, we are known, accounted for, and cared for—one person at a time.”

It's unfortunate that that bishopric member said what he did to that brother.

Often in my experience I find that God gives us the opportunity to reach out to the ones who've been cast aside by others, and help them feel welcome & wanted (as directed by the Spirit, of course).

I hope you get another chance to talk to him.

  33. It is difficult when you don't feel cared about. And each of us needs to consistently be seeking ways to better care for other's as the Savior would.

Also, depending on the context, the comment could be spot on or totally inappropriate. Bishops are men and are prone to the foibles and follies that snare each of us. That said, one of the challenges, for example, with using fast offerings to help with temporal needs is 1) the Church does emphasize the need for individuals to use non-Church means first (i.e. self, family, community / government resources) and 2) all too often the receiving of fast offerings eventually leads to a sense of entitlement. In areas other than temporal needs we are likewise exhorted to be self-reliant.

As to the comment of wanting ward leadership to help with the building of the feeling of a ward family, I think that is an entirely appropriate vision for ward leaders.

  34. Has anyone received news about the new Spruce Grove Alberta Stake yesterday or the possible General Santos Philippines Stake "special conference"? I couldn't find any information from the facebook pages for the stakes involved publicly available.

  35. Last summer, Kananga DR Congo went from 3 stakes to 6 stakes. 3 of those 6 stakes already have 9 wards--Kananaga Ndesha, Kananga, and Malandji. If they each get another ward this year (and I have no idea how likely that is), Kananga could potentially have 8-9 stakes sometime in 2027. 3 stakes in early 2025 to 8-9 stakes in 2027 would be jawdropping.
