Yesterday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced plans to build a temple in Portland, Maine in a stake Christmas fireside by Elder Allen D. Haynie, the United States Northeast Area President. This marks the first time that the Church has announced plans for a new temple outside of General Conference since the announcement of the Ephraim Utah temple on May 1st, 2021. Moreover, this announcement was also unique since an area president delivered it. Historically, the Church has tended to announce most temples in General Conference, although this has not always been the case; however, all new temples have been announced directly by the First Presidency or the presiding Church leader either personally or by letter. The news release yesterday noted that it is anticipated that additional new temples will be announced in a similar format, although this does not mean that temple announcements in General Conference will be retired. Localized temple announcements bring many advantages, such as delivering news of a new temple within the local time zone and adapting the announcement to the needs and circumstances of the membership to be served by the temple.
Maine (year-end 2024 membership: 11,384) was the state in the United States with the third most Latter-day Saints without a temple prior to yesterday's announcement. There remain only six states without a temple planned or dedicated, including Mississippi (22,297), West Virginia (17,557), New Hampshire (8,713), Delaware (5,865), Rhode Island (4,861), and Vermont (4,647). Mississippi and West Virginia appear the most likely to have a temple announced within the foreseeable future. The Church in Maine has experienced slow growth throughout its history. One in 123 people are Latter-day Saints, or 0.81% of the state population. Membership growth from 4,730 in 1983 to 7,900 in 1995 to 9,807 in 2005 and 10,966 in 2015. There has been a modest improvement in annual membership growth rates in the 2020s (0.6-1.6%) versus the 2010s (0.3-0.8% for most years). Congregational growth has been flat except for a couple branches becoming wards in the past decade. There are three stakes in Maine. The Portland Maine Temple will likely service 6-7 stakes in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Isolation from the nearest temple in Boston, Massachusetts appears to be the primary factor that has influenced the decision to build a temple in Maine.
I also updated the list of stakes and districts created and discontinued for 2025. Let me know if I missed anything!
ReplyDeleteGreat report, Matt! Thanks for the analysis. I especially appreciated this sentence: "The news release yesterday noted that it is anticipated that additional new temples will be announced in a similar format, although this does not mean that temple announcements in General Conference will be retired." It seems that some people took President Oaks' statement at General Conference to mean that no temples would be announced at General Conference going forward. But as Elder Haynie noted in making the announcement: "“President Oaks did not say there would be no further announcements of new temples — only that the timing and location of future announcements would be determined later"
ReplyDeleteLocalized temple announcements will be a good thing. I could also see the apostles or area presidencies introducing localized announcements of site locations, exterior renderings, groundbreakings, and dedications for the same reasons.
While I don't think that temple announcements will be fully eliminated or omitted from General Conference anytime soon, I expect that localized temple announcements will reduce the number that will be announced in subsequent General Conferences. I think it is highly probable that one or mroe additional new temples may be announced before the April 2026 General Conference. Hope these musings, such as they are, are helpful.
Last sunday Itacoatiara Brazil District was upgrade to stake
ReplyDeleteHi all, really exciting to hear all the new stakes/districts coming out in the last while plus all the temple news/updates.
ReplyDeleteDuring my review of the Africa Central Area, I found some new units. It's been a while since my last review so I'm not sure how recent or not these are, but I've noted the changes I've seen for anyone who might be interested as well.

Hi! When was your last review?
DeleteGood stuff. Kisii (Kenya) also has a Hedrickite (Church of Christ, Temple Lot) presence. They have about three or four congregations in that region of Kenya.
DeleteHii Michael, not too sure but probably around July was my last review.
DeleteThe Tshikapa DR Congo district was organized this past weekend.
ReplyDeleteAlso found on another site, posted earlier today a post from a Central Point Oregon Stake (515213), realignment last sunday. Stating the Medford 3rd Ward (85235) was dissolved at stake conference and the White City Ward (234818), was renamed the Mt McLoughlin Ward (234818). Even though it shows a Stake Presidency letter. The meetinghouse still reflects the old names, at the time of writing this post. The map may get updated later this week with the new ward borders.

Other Matt here...
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting the renaming of the San Jose California Temple to the Sunnyvale California Temple. I have friends to work for the Church's facilities department. There's a pending closure of a meetinghouse in Fremont that will be turned "into something special". It wouldn't surprise me if the church decides to turn that property into a temple (which is on the other side of San Jose), in between the Sunnyvale and Oakland Temples.
I wouldn't be so sure of that. There is a reason why multiple meetinghouses have shuttered in the Fremont area. The membership base simply isn't there anymore to justify them. There is now only one stake covering the entire area from Hayward to Fremont that used to be 3 stakes. Fremont is also only about 30 minutes in either direction to Oakland and Sunnyvale.
DeleteCould "something special" mean an EFY center (like they are building adjacent to the Preston England temple) or a BYU-Pathway learning support center? Or maybe another temple.
DeleteFound some new units and unit changes during my review of the Africa South Area. Again, been a while since my last review.

It looks like that in the Toamasina Madagascar Stake, Depot Analakininina got once added as a ward and once as a branch, since thy have the same name and the Bishop / branch president have the same name. One of them is propably a mistake.
DeleteIn the Harare Zimbabwe South Stake i think that the Mbare 2nd Ward got renamed Waterfalls Ward
Just from looking at the stake map, I think a Manchester New Hampshire is more likely than a temple in Mississippi and as likely as a Charleston West Virginia Temple.
ReplyDeleteI expected Maine to have a temple announced in Conference, given the creation of the third stake in the state and the challenge of traveling to Boston for many members. I had expected it to be announced for Augusta, which is more central to the state, but either way it is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAs for other states without temples (before Sunday): I expect Charleston, West Virginia will have a temple announced before too long, to cover the three stakes in the state.
I don't see Rhode Island ever getting a temple, as it is so close to Boston. Regionally I'd put one in the Hudson Valley around Albany long before I'd put one in Rhode Island. Nearby I could possibly see a temple in Delaware, but probably not, and one in Scranton could serve a few stakes in the area.
Vermont could possibly have a small temple announced but it is unlikely. The church members in Vermont are aging and a few units have been shut recently. The only way I could imagine it would be to have a small temple in South Royalton at the Joseph Smith Memorial, where it could serve both the Montpelier Vermont Stake and the Concord NH stake, as well as the visitors who come to the site.
I'd love to have one in Mississippi. There is a pretty big temple gap from central Arkansas all the way to Pensacola, and four small temples could be built in Little Rock, Longview/Shreveport, Pensacola/Mobile, and finally one in Mississippi in Jackson or Hattiesburg.
There is another temple gap on the Atlantic coast in the Carolinas. There are six stakes along the coast, and two small temples serving three stakes each is possible.
I wonder if major announcements going to be the new norm - not just with temples. Sister missionary age changes were announced outside of conference. New leadership didn't wait till conference...
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had a General Conference while he has been president of the church so this maybe too early to say. General conference is going to have one less session so this time maybe reserved for personal instruction rather than churchwide announcements. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
As with my temple predictions, I will update and count about a month in advance of each general conference whether they're announced in or out of general conference. General conference still seems to be a good milestone to make additional predictions.
Hello, Rocky, and thanks for the information on new African units. Do you have totals of Wards and Branches for these nations? The information available to us is greatly outdated.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the Democratic Republuc of the Congo has had 9 new districts organized this year. This is very encouraging. There are still huge parts of that country that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not really reached at all.
