51 New Stakes Created in 2025 Thus Far; New Stakes Created in the DR Congo (4), Colorado, Papua New Guinea, Peru, and the Philippines; New Districts Created in Angola and the DR Congo

The Church has created at least 51 new stakes thus far in 2025 - the highest number of new stakes created during the first half of the calendar year since 2016 when there were a total of 100 new stakes created for the year. See below for a pie chart showing the distribution of new stakes created thus far in 2025 versus the first 50 new stakes created in 2016. As indicated by these pie charts, the distribution of new stakes created in 2025 is remarkably similar to 2016 except with more new stakes created in North America and fewer new stakes created in Latin America in 2025.

Prospects appear likely for many new stakes to be created for the remainder of 2025. For example, one recent report from a senior missionary serving in the Africa Central Area noted that there will be 17 new stakes organized just within this area alone by the end of the year (so far this year, eight new stakes have been organized in the Africa Central Area). To put this into perspective, the Africa Central Area has generally had fewer than five new stakes per year but will reportedly have 25 new stakes in 2025 - approximately half the number of new stakes organized in an average year during the past two decades.

Now, for an update new stakes recently created:

DR Congo

Four new stakes and one new district were recently created in the DR Congo.

Three new stakes were created in the city of Kananga on June 15th where the total number of stakes increased from three to six, as each of the previous three stakes was divided to create a new stake. The new Kananga DR Congo Ndesha Stake is reported to include the following six wards: the Kapanda, Katoka 1st, Kele-Kele, Lulua, Ndesha 3rd, and Tshibandabanda Wards. The new Kananga DR Congo Lukonga Stake includes the following five wards: the Kamilabi, Lukonga 1st, Lukonga 2nd, Ndesha 1st, and the Ndesha 2nd Wards. Information on which wards are assigned to the new Kananga DR Congo Nganza Stake remains unavailable.

The Church organized its 16th stake in Kinshasa on June 22nd. The Kinshasa DR Congo Kimbwala Stake was organized from a division of the Kinshasa DR Congo Lukunga Stake (organized in 2019). The new stake includes the following six wards and one branch: the Kimbwala 1st, Kimbwala 2nd, Lutendele 1st, Lutendele 2nd, Mbudi, and Tshikapa Wards and the Mafuta Branch. Kinshasa now ties with Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, as the metropolitan area on the Afro-Eurasian landmass with the most stakes (16). Several more new stakes appear likely to be created in Kinshasa in the immediate future from a division of the Kinshasa DR Congo N'Djili Stake (11 wards, 2 branches), the Kinshasa DR Congo Ngaliema Stake (11 wards), and the Kinshasa DR Congo Kimbanseke Stake (10 wards).

Finally, a new district was recently created from three mission branches in the city of Kikwit where the first branch was organized in 2021. The Kikwit DR Congo District includes the following three branches: the Kazamba, the Kikwit, and the Lukolela Branches. The new district is the Church's fourth new district to be organized in the DR Congo in 2025.

There are now 38 stakes and five districts in the DR Congo. The DR Congo now has the 14th most stakes of any country in the world, having recently surpassed Bolivia (33), Venezuela (33), and Colombia (32). In addition to the three large stakes in Kinshasa that appear likely to divide in the immediate future, six more stakes appear likely to divide in the near future, including:

  • Katuba DR Congo Stake (11 wards)
  • Kolwezi DR Congo Stake (12 wards, 2 branches)
  • Luputa DR Stake (10 wards, 1 branch)
  • Mbuji-Mayi DR Congo Stake (9 wards)
  • Mwene-Ditu DR Congo Stake (9 wards, 2 branches - NOTE: this stake divided in June 2024)
  • Ngandajika DR Congo Stake (11 wards - NOTE: this stake was just created in March 2023)

Consequently, there may be as many as 47 stakes in the DR Congo by year-end 2026, which would place the DR Congo as the country with the 11th most stakes in the world.

Colorado

A new stake was created in Colorado on June 8th. The Fruita Colorado Stake was created from a division of the Grand Junction Colorado West Stake (organized in 1983). The new stake includes the following six wards: the Adobe Creek, Aspen, Highline, Monument, Rimrock, and Salt Wash Wards. There are now three stakes in Grand Junction (the first stake in the city was created in 1955). The new stake is the Church's first new stake in Colorado since 2017.

There are now 36 stakes in Colorado.

Papua New Guinea

The Church organized a new stake in Papua New Guinea. The Oro Papua New Guinea Stake was created from the Oro Papua New Guinea District (organized in 2002) on June 22nd. The new stake includes the following five wards: the Ititi, Korisata, Popondetta 1st, Popondetta 2nd, and Utukiari Wards. Rapid growth has recently occurred in this area of Papua New Guinea which has had a Church presence for several decades. At the beginning of the conference to create the new stake, 107 new converts were baptized in the Bangoho River. There also appear to be several member groups that operate within the stake, such as in Afore, Kiorata, Sangara, and Warigena (per previously shown meetinghouses on the meetinghouse locator website which are now no longer visible).

The Church in Papua New Guinea has had an unprecedented year in regard to new stake creations, as stakes were recently organized nine months earlier in Madang (September 2024) and one month earlier in Lae (May 2025). Moreover, local members report that a new stake will be created from the Minj Papua New Guinea District on August 3rd. There are currently five stakes and nine districts in Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea has one of the most rural populations in the world (86.3%) which has complicated efforts to create stakes in areas with low population density and limited accessibility due to remoteness. Several additional districts appear likely to become stakes in the foreseeable future, including Gerehu (seven branches), Moveave (eight branches), Rigo (10 branches), and Sogere (11 branches). With each new stake created, the prospects increase for the expansion into unreached areas, as mission resources can be rebalanced from strengthening districts to become stakes to establishing groups and branches in additional communities. Papua New Guinea has enormous potential to become a major powerhouse for the Church in the Pacific considering it is one of the most populous nations in the region with over 10 million people yet remains only 0.38% Latter-day Saint.

Peru

A new stake was created in Peru on June 22nd. The Cañete Perú Stake was organized from the Cañete Perú District (organized in 1997). All five branches in the former district were organized into wards, namely the Cañete, the Imperial, the Mala, the Nuevo Imperial, and the Quilmaná Wards.

There are now 117 stakes and 17 districts in Peru.

Philippines

A new stake was created in the Philippines on June 22nd. The Siniloan Philippines Stake was created from the Siniloan Philippines District (organized in 1992). The new stake includes the following five wards and two branches: the Pakil 1st, Pakil 2nd, Santa Maria, Siniloan 1st, and Siniloan 2nd Ward and the Infanta Branch. The new stake is the Church's second new stake to be created in the Philippines this year.

There are now 133 stakes and 54 districts in the Philippines.

Angola

The Church recently organized a new district in Angola. The Menongue Angola District includes three branches (including one newly organized branch created at the time of the district's formation). The two original branches in Menongue previously were under the direct supervision of the Angola Luanda Mission. The three branches in the new district are the Menongue 1st, Menongue 2nd, and the Menongue 3rd Branches. The Church created its first branch in Menongue in 2022.

There are now two stakes and three districts in Angola.

  1. Amazing news (if correct) out of Central Africa. I wondered why Central Africa got it's own area before the large Africa West Area split, but the last few years have shown me the wonderful reasons for this prioritization!

A ward (Sunrise Valley Ward) in Washington, Utah grew so large with average attendance over 1,600, it split last Sunday, into 4 wards (Red Waters, Riverbend, Long Valley 1st, and Long Valley 2nd Wards).

    1. Wow. 1,600 people can't even comfortably fit in some Utah stake centers, let alone just for 1 ward. My 7-ward stake in east Salt Lake County probably only has around 1,200ish active membership. Those new wards are still going to be quite large - 400ish in active membership is almost enough to justify additional ward splits.

      Here's a source - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEDP5BZSJ34

I honestly wonder where all these new wards will go - some will certainly drive a ways by Utah standards. Most nearby buildings already have 4 wards (though I suppose they could push 5, as done in NW Arkansas).

    2. Looks like Red Waters is the new name of the Sunrise Valley Ward.

    3. Has there been a large increase in congregations ? Or are the stakes just getting smler ?

2 of the new wards will be meeting in Hurricane in the Dixie Springs Bldg, and another ward meeting on the other end of town. This is until new buildings are built.

    1. It seems like further growth is likely in one or more of these wards, as lots of new homes (50+) are up for sale right now.

  5. The growth is truly amazing. Naysayers will probably find something to naysay (these were just delayed splits, it's all due to lowered stake reqs, etc). I'm just going to appreciate what we are witnessing.

A 1-->4 ward split is impressive. I wonder how long it took to get from the size to do 1-->2 wards to the 1-->4 ward size. As for travel distances, "by Utah standards" is an apt statement. A member in our stake presidency was joking with our bishopric yesterday about his brother in Queen Creek, AZ who has to drive a whole 20 minutes to church and stake center. Meanwhile, in our stake presidency, the closest of them lives 45-60 minutes from the stake center.

  6. Over 35 years ago, when I lived over in the Reno metro area, we were informed that the stake presidency in the Fallon Nevada steak lives so far apart that they had to meet for their stake presidency meetings in a car. They would all drive and meet at the intersection of Highway 50 and some other highway there way out in the remote Regions of Nevada we’re all three of them were drive and meet up. Sit in the car and have their steak presidency meetings in a car. It’s amazing the dedication that many members of the church give and how that eventually pays off. There’s now two steaks in Fallon, And a temple in Elko and a temple in Reno and quite a few new words all throughout that area. Just some interesting thoughts.

  7. Things are looking up a lot in DR Congo. Still with how much east Africa has had baptisms of late I hope we see more stakes over there as well. I also hope we have progress for the Kampala Uganda Temple.

The Singapore Temple had a ground breaking and the Joseph Smith memorial building partially reopened. There are also some updates on progress with the Salt Lake Temple renovation.

  8. The Starkville Branch in Mississippi was recently upgraded to a ward. Good to see progress there. I don't have much data to back this claim up, but I feel like the South will be a major engine for church growth in the US over the next few decades.

    1. I think both the Midwest and South. I did predict another "Mormon Belt" from Indiana through southern Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma to DFW and I stand by that prediction.

  11. New Marshallese Branch in Oklahoma

    Dear Sisters and Brothers,

We are overjoyed to announce the formation of a new branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Tulsa Oklahoma Stake, specifically organized to serve our beloved Marshallese members in northeastern Oklahoma. This new branch—the Gilcrease Hills Branch (Marshallese)— affords our Marshallese members the opportunity to worship in the language of their heart, share their rich culture and traditions, and build a strong community of faith. It is a beautiful manifestation of the gathering in these latter days, and of our Father in Heaven’s love and mindfulness of all people (see Alma 26:37).

We invite all members to extend a warm welcome and support to our Marshallese brothers and sisters as this new branch is established. It is a time for us to have our "hearts knit together in unity and in love one towards another." (Mosiah 18:21).

Details for the Gilcrease Hills Branch:

    Meeting Time: 2:00pm
    Location: New Haven Building
    Branch President: Alinton Matauto
We are excited for the spiritual growth and unity this new branch will bring to our community and look forward to seeing the blessings that will come to all of us as we work together to build up the Kingdom of God.

    With love,

    The Tulsa Oklahoma Stake Presidency

    1. Maybe this link will help. I just completed my list of about 32,000 Wards and Districts worldwide. I still have about 4,000 Unit numbers to add. It also includes several hundred Congregations from 2018 that are no longer on the Meetinghouse website.

  13. Curious if there exists somewhere a comprehensive list of all branches that are not part of a stake or district? I'm curious to see how many countries are 100% covered by stakes or districts. I know the U.S. and Canada are not. Would also be interesting to see why they are not part of a stake or district, for instance the two mission branches in southern Texas, or the Buenaventura Branch in Colombia (where half the city is part of a ward that meets in Cali).

    1. In the United States, the Rio Grande City and Roma Branches in Southern Texas are the only Branches not part of a District or Stake. In Canada, the Quebec Montreal Mission Branch is the only Branch not part of a Stake or District.

  14. For example, in the few weeks it took me to copy and paste the rest of the Stake/District units from the Meetinghouse list to the above Document.

Now going back to add the missing unit numbers, I now find in the Olinda Brazil Stake (514764), the Jardim Brasil 1st Ward (347345) was renamed the Jardim Brasil Ward (347345), and the Jardim Brasil 2nd Ward was discontinued.

And in the Pacajus Brazil Stake (1411578), where i had copied a couple weeks ago the Alameda Branch, has been discontinued. As well as the Tabajaras Ward (415855). Are both no longer on the Meetinghouse site.

I'm sure i will find many more changes. The Wards/Branches change practically on a daily basis. And very difficult to get an exact number at any one time.

  15. What are the implications of how a branch functions when it is not part of a district or stake? I am wonderring what the reasons are for why the church doesn't designate them to be part of a stake or district.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Can't speak for all branches, but some I imagine is due to remoteness or long travel times, particularly for areas where technology or cheap/reliable transportation might not be prevalent. It can be a tad bit frustrating how inconsistent some boundaries are drawn, for example: Latvia and Lithuania. Latvia is entirely within the Riga Latvia District, while for Lithuania, the Vilnius Lithuania District only covers the immediate areas around branches in the district, while the rest of the country is under the Baltic Mission Branch. There are parts of the Accra, Ghana metro that are under a mission branch, while there are several stakes in the city. There is the L'viv Ukraine District Branch, which only covers the Ternopil Oblast, while all the other branches in the district cover the entirety of their respective oblasts. Why not just rename it the Ternopil Branch?

I wish to avoid further ranting, so I'll leave it there.

    1. Yeah, it looks like realistically this will only affect one branch long-term. The branch in Beijing for Chinese nationals seems to have run afoul of the government in some ways, but it sounds like for now, the English-speaking branch can continue operating, though it's going to have issues with the building.

  18. Generally the mission branch covers areas that have groups and the branch president is the mission president. So in an area where you are not ready to have a branch president you would make it a mission branch. In stakes groups are always placed under a ward or branch and never directly under the stake.

You do not want to extend stakes beyond the limit their leadership can support. Exactly how that is determined at times seems complex.
