First Stake to be Organized in Tanzania on January 26th, 2025

Reports from Latter-day Saints living in Tanzania indicate that the Church will organize its first stake in the East African nation of Tanzania this Sunday. The Dar es Salaam Tanzania Stake will be created from the Dar es Salaam Tanzania District, which was organized in 2005. Currently, there are 10 branches in the district, but it is unclear how many of these branches will become wards once the stake is organized.

Among countries with at least 2,000 Latter-day Saints, Tanzania provides a remarkable example of a nation that has experienced a dramatic shift from slow or stagnant growth to some of the most rapid growth rates in the worldwide Church over the past decade. From 2004 to 2018, there were only four branches in Dar es Salaam. It took nearly three decades for the Church to reach 2,000 members after its initial establishment in 1992. However, everything changed with the organization of the Tanzania Dar es Salaam Mission in 2020. Before this, the Kenya Nairobi Mission oversaw missionary efforts and Church administration in Tanzania, which meant limited resources were allocated to the nation’s 65.4 million people (2024 estimate).

Another major catalyst for growth was the Church’s decision in the 2010s to officially change the language used in Church administration and worship services from English to Swahili, enabling more effective missionary efforts. Church membership in Tanzania grew from 1,793 at the end of 2019 to 3,969 by the end of 2023. The number of branches in the country also increased significantly, from six in 2018 to 34 as of the end of 2024. Many of these new branches began as member groups to improve accessibility to worship services in major cities with an official Church presence.

Three additional districts were organized during this period of rapid growth: a second district in Dar es Salaam in 2022 (which reportedly will not be realigned or combined with the new stake) and the first districts in Arusha (2022) and Mwanza (2023). Given the higher member activity standards for new stake organization outside the United States, which were implemented in 2024, the creation of the first stake in Tanzania is an even greater accomplishment and a testament to the quality of this recent growth.

The creation of a second stake in Dar es Salaam also appears likely, as the Dar es Salaam Tanzania Chang'ombe District currently has eight branches and has experienced similarly impressive growth rates. Furthermore, the announcement of a temple in Dar es Salaam seems increasingly plausible given these developments, which establish a more self-sustaining center of strength for the Church in the area.

Despite this progress, the Church in Tanzania remains relatively small compared to the nation’s population. As of the end of 2023, only one in every 17,000 Tanzanians was a member on Church records, and only five cities have had branches organized.

But, currently I have no clue who is presiding over the Ukraine Dnipro Mission, if anyone. or if the Mission has been "Temporarily Closed" during the ongoing conflict. Like the Nicaragua Managua South Mission was temporarily closed a few years. (It was open in name only).

I think when the war opened and all non-Russian full time volunteers were removed the Novosibirsk Mission ended up with about 10 volunteers. The other missions had similar numbers. War time manpower demands have probably made it hard to increase these numbers. So at least from a direct supervision standpoint these missions are not hard to run. Thry still have church units directly under them and other things besides assigned people serving.

We have a new set of Mission leaders. The Chivungus at 46 may be the youngest this week. At least so far Mission leaders seem a little older this year than in past years. Not hugely so though.

The Chivungus currently as FSY session directors in Zimbabwe. Brther Chivungu was previously in a stake Presidency, and had several other callings, I believe bishop, young mrn's president, seminary teacher and institute teacher. The one that surprised me was temple worker. Does this mean he was a temple worker in Johanesburg even though he lives in Harare, Zimbabwe?

I have really enjoyed this work, not for immediate use, but for future research when time permits better. It is useful content not only for research related to church growth, but it has many other possible uses. If you consider that this is not the most suitable place, dear Chris, I would be grateful if you could indicate another link where we can be informed about this significant work of yours.

The new leaders of the Toronto Mission are Chinese Americans from Hawaii, well the wife might be at least part Japanese. Well they now live in Laie and the wife was born in Kahuku. The husband was born in San Francisco. He served in the New York New York North Mission and is 48, so I think he was under Elder Rasband. So was Dustin Matsumori the head of planning and business operations for the BYU medical school, who is the son of Cickie Matsumori who was in the primary General Presidency.

As an interesting personal note, my "adopted" Uncle David and Aunt Stacie Sturt (serving in Nairobi Kenya) were among the mission leaders whose replacements were announced this week. We look forward to having them home and to seeing what's next for them.

You just have to change the numbers at the end for each Unit.

OC Surfer: Since Madagascar is separated from the rest of the African continent by water, it will be more difficult for the Church to ship supplies there as they would for "normal temples". With that in mind, the modules would be easier to transport to the "island nation", and the Church has been using the modular method in other locations where shipping normal construction supplies may be problematic. My understanding is that Tarawa Kiribati and Antananarivo will both be modular temples. I could be mistaken on that, but time will tell.

What an incredible story, Chris! My great-grandmother was from the Alesi (or Alessi) family in Ascoli. Another new 5 ward stake in a non-high growth area of the US. I personally still think it is a bit of a weird decision. 7 wards seems to me to be the more ideal size for a stake in the US. However, Hawaii is one of the highest baptizing missions in the United States, so I could see additional congregations being created in the next few years. Anybody else have thoughts/experiences from being in a 5-ward stake in the US?

Caleb said...

In other news though, the last (and only) time there have been 9 or more stakes created before February 10th in a single year (since 2007, which this blog tracks) was in 2016, when 10 were created by that date. 2016 also saw 100 new stakes created, by far the highest total since 2007. If stake creation trends in 2025 mirror those of other years (meaning they accelerate in the second half of the year) 2025 could absolutely see a much higher total of new stakes created than any past year since 2016.

Oddly enough both the new Santa Maria Brazil West Stake, and this new Adzope Cote d'Ivoire Stake, are both assigned still to the Mission and not reassigned to the Area Leadership. That's why I didn't catch it in last weeks review of the Mission Districts. I wasn't checking to see if the names changed from District to Stake under the Mission assigned units. I only caught it this week when I saw the Akoupe District was no longer in the Mission list.

On https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/news/ it says “There is currently no evidence of construction at the Bengaluru India Temple site where the scaffolding and construction equipment have been removed, and the window openings have been shuttered.” It looks like the exterior still needs a lot of work; I hope this isn’t due to some new delay! Maybe it’s seasonal?

James G. Stokes said...

The status of that temple was updated again today: "Construction delayed due to current finance laws". So the government of India may expect or require the Church to pay a penalty or bribe before construction can resume.

Anonymous said...

It is not seasonal. Laws designed to prevent churches, and especially churches that proselyte, from bringing money into the country from abroad have made it difficult for the church to transfer money into India for several years now. This has necessitated closing some church buildings (for instance, the Noida branch now meets in Lajpat Nagar in spite of the distance in order to reduce the costs of rent associated with the old Noida building). It has reached a point where it is no longer possible to finance the temple with money from church headquarters due to those laws, and tithing money within India is not currently sufficient to pay for a temple on top of the other expenses (chapels, etc.).

The BJP (the party in power) is a strident Hindutva (Hindu chauvinist) party - indeed, it functioned as the political wing of Hindu paramilitaries/terrorists for much of its history, though there was a falling out between the BJP and RSS a few years ago. The BJP views Muslims and Christians with a great deal of hostility and has utilized the full force of the government to oppress both groups for the decade-plus it has been in power. Fundamentally the issue is that in the eyes of Hindutva, Indianness and Hinduism are one and the same, and views non-Dharmic religions, particularly ones that proselyte, as a threat to their vision of an India governed by Hindutva principles.

This is something I have been eagerly expecting. I was familiar with about 6 or 7 of the new hymns released today. I've already tried playing 5 of them on my piano. 2 of the new ones are in the Easter section, I'm hoping we get more Christmas ones in the next release.

These hymns are now published in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

I noticed the article also says the hymns from the first release, from May last year, are now available in 3 more languages (Korean, German, and Tagalog), with Japanese and Mandarin Chinese to be coming out soon. And some of these new hymns were already published in the existing hymnals in a few other languages.

This new global hymnal is doing a lot to increase the worldwide unity of the Church, I love the vision. As does the global curriculum, the global church magazines, and the global youth programs.

John Pack Lambert said...

Global unity of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has increased a l8t under President Nelson.

Having a globally accessible Salt Lake Temple will also help this.

2/3rds of the apostles called by President Nelson are not Americans. Which is also 2/3rd of the non-American apostles.

Brother and Soster Jordan who will lead the Philadelphia Temple I once knew one of their daughters. She was in my group at EFY way back in 1998. I have reached the point where many incoming Temple presidents have children my age. Our Temple president and matron here in Michigan have a daughter who was one of the relief society presidents in my ward my first year at BYU (1999-2000).

EFY being replaced by FSY is another example of creating a more globally unified church.

I think the new hymnbook just in its released hymns to date is almost to the level of Eastr hymns that the old hymnbook was at.

That's 5 wards and 3 branches. That would leave 13 wards and a branch remaining amongst both Lisbon and Oeiras. There are also locations in Caldas da Rainha and Peniche that do not show a congregation, yet shows a meeting time. I presume both of these will belong to the Santarém Stake.

Today marked 172 years since the groundbreaking on the Salt Lake Temple. I do not think we have had open houses announced 2 years in advance. Salt Lake City is special. I am sure attendance will break 1 million, maybe 2 million.

The rededication of the Salt Lake Temple will be almost 8 years after it was closed. The plan was originally for 4 years but they had to hand dig the underground wholes. 4 years also probably never incorporated open house and other parts of the period between completion and dedication.

I will try to make it to the open house.

New mission presidents are out again for this week. Mission presidents are still disproportionately American. Here in Detroit we seem to be trending over half from Utah. I understand why this is, but look forward to the day we keep a mission president from the eastern US or who is African-American. That is not this day. Our new mission president was born in Mapleton and now resides in Springville.

With will under half of Church membership, in fact not much more than a third, in the US, it seems odd that consistently over half of the new mission presidents called each week are from the US. I understand why this is, and I know we have made progress. I just hope we can make more.

This week we had 2 Filipino, 2 Brazilian, 1 Mexican, 1 Urugayan and 1 Argentime couple called. The Utmruguayan couples goes to Barranquilla Columbia where thry both served missions. The Argentine couple goes to Mexico. Both Brazilians go to Brwmazil, the Mexican couple goes to Mexico and 1 of the Filipino couples goes to the Philippines. However the Ledesmas from the Philippines will lead the Anchorage Alaska Mission.

The new mission president in Mongolia is only 37. He is the youngest whose call has been announced yet this year.

David McFadden said...

I praise the announcement of the new Salt Lake Temple open house as it will gives the opportunity for more members to prepare to attend - especially those requiring a visa to attend and/or those needing to plan to save up for travel costs.

The only significant drawback of scheduling this far in advance for a construction project is there's a number of variables that can cause delay or keep it on track. Be too conservative and the completed temple may sit for a while unused. Be too ambitious but end up in delays, then the planned schedule would have to be changed.

On MormonShrivel blog, it was asked about a possible split of the Bozeman Montana Stake this week.

Has anyone heard anything about it? Thoughts anybody?

It appears from thr Meetinghouse website, that it has several Wards and Branches already.

Per facebook, the Bozeman Montana Stake will indeed split to create a new stake tomorrow, February 16th.

Chris D. said...

Thanks, Caleb, for that great update.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if it's going to be accompanied by a ward creation/branch upgrade. As it stands, the Bozeman stake has nine wards and five branches, with one ward being YSA and one branch being Spanish.

Currently, the obvious split is to create a Belgrade Montana Stake.
-Belgrade 1st Ward
-Belgrade 2nd Ward
-Ennis Branch (passes through Four Corners, which is in the Bozeman 1st Ward)
-Gallatin Ward
-Three Forks Ward

That leaves the Bozeman Montana Stake with:
-Big Sky Branch (also passes through Four Corners)
-Big Timber Branch
-Bozeman 1st Ward
-Bozeman 2nd Ward
-Bozeman 3rd Ward
-Gardiner Branch
-Livingston Ward
-Bozeman YSA Ward
-Bridger Branch [Spanish] (used to be called Belgrade 3rd, but meets in Bozeman)

These congregations may or may not be transferred (likely not):
-Absarokee Branch (Billings South - much closer to Billings)
-Harlowtown Branch (Billings - could go either way between Billings and Bozeman)
-Sheridan Ward (Butte - seems likely, but could very much depend on Whitehall Ward)
-Townsend Ward (Helena - a bit closer to Helena than Belgrade)
-West Yellowstone Ward (Ashton - much closer to Ashton and would not involve mountainous travel)
-Whitehall Ward (Butte - a bit closer to Butte than Belgrade)
-White Sulfur Springs Branch (Helena - closer to Helena, but could go with either Bozeman or Belgrade with an added dependency on where Townsend Ward goes)

It looks highly likely we will see multiple stakes in northwest Missouri formed this year. 13 wards could be split into 2 stakes, even without 3 branches.

The Swahili branch is Dsyton is great news. My general sense is Gere in Deteoit a French-speaking branch might be doable. We have more people from the Republic of Congo and Cameroon who at least somewhat speak French then from places in East Africa who speak Swahili. However at least in my branch those we are baptizing are almost complete US born Afeican-Americans, so at least my branch will not be a place of linguistic outreach anytime soon. We have one member who was born in Jamaica, and he is one of our branch missionaries. I have doubts even of we got a lot of Jamaicans that we could convince anyone creating a Patois speaking unit was needed.

Here https://www.thechurchnews.com/members/2025/02/17/byu-law-school-master-laws-degree-llm-blessing-church-nations/ is an article on BYU's LLM program. The program takes in only non-US students, and currently has 10. The goal is yo send them back to their home countries. Evidently they all get full scholarships, at the vast of $60,000 a year. Many other institutions use LLM programs as a major income source. The dean of BYU's law school wants to expand the program to 15 students a year. A good portion of the students are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but not all. One of the current students is a man from Liberia who served his mission in the Lagos and Ibadan missions and was involved in anti-corruption efforts in Liberia before he came to BYU.

I would say the same is true for NW Arkansas if they can get more chapels.
Bentonville Arkansas Stake - 13 Wards
Rogers Arkansas Stake - 10 Wards, 2 branches
Springdale Arkansas Stake - 10 Wards, 1 Branch
All 4 chapels in Benton County (Bentonville, Bella Vista, Centerton, Rogers) have 5 units assigned - There's no room to split wards.

The following stakes could possibly form if they had chapels
Bella Vista Arkansas Stake
Cave Springs/Lowell/Rogers Arkansas South Stake
Centerton Arkansas Stake
Fayetteville Arkansas Stake

Adam said...

Centerton is having a stake center open later this year, Cave Springs closed on land in December, Pea Ridge has land under contract for a stake center that hasn't yet been purchased.

Our ward in Pea Ridge averaged 240 members early last year, got up to 300 in October, then split 2 wards into 3 in November. We are already back up to having 200 attending, just 40 less than this time last year.

David McFadden said...

Thank you for the update Adam! What I stated was of course speculation, but your input clarifies a lot.

David, when there are 5 wards meeting in each of the NW Arkansas chapels, one solution would be renting another church nearby to accommodate some of the wards. This was done in Manhattan. The wards meeting in the same building as the Manhattan Temple had to move temporarily while the remodeling took place. They are now in a historic Protestant church near Central Park.

The Tabernacle Choir has also arrived in Peru, which is its first time every going to that country.

John Pack Lambert said...

The stadium the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square is performing at on Saturday in Peru holds 30,000 people. This is evidently the largest stadium the Tabernacle Choir has performed a full concert in. This is almost 50% larger than the Conference Center's 21,000 or so. I think that is about what the National Auditorium where they performed in 2023 in Mexico holds. The State Farm Arena in Atlanta Georgia where they performed last September holds just under 17,000 people. So not small, but 30,000 is clearly more.

John Pack Lambert said...

Christine Rappleye, the Church News reporter who wrote the article about the Tabernacle Choir going to Peru wins the award for burrying the lead. She snuck this in near the end of the article "It’s anticipated that the “Songs of Hope” tour will continue to 2027 and conclude with the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple, President Leavitt said." I am not that surprised, since it is the Taberancle Choir at Temple Square. Still this is the first time that event, the choir and this tour were all linked together. Also, it is the first clear indication that the Salt Lake Temple will be rededicated in 2027, although with the open house ending in October that seemed likely.

Why don't you let Matt decide which comments go or stay? If there were "security reasons" to conceal the ministry of our apostles, I highly doubt the Newsroom and the Church News would post reports on their ministry visits, and we've had at least five such reports via Church News and the Newsroom in the last two days. Their ministry is part of Church growth, so it's absolutely fair game and appropriate to post such reports here. Matt will delete any comments he finds problematic. That's not our call to make.

Ryan Searcy said...

I don't really see the Arcadia Stake splitting, looking at it and its neighboring stakes.
-Arcadia - 7 wards, 1 branch (1 ward, 1 branch in Spanish, 1 ward in Chinese)
-Glendora - 7 wards (1 ward in Spanish)
-Hacienda Heights - 5 wards (1 ward in Spanish, 1 ward in Chinese)
-Whittier - 6 wards (1 ward in Spanish)
-Pasadena - 6 wards (1 ward in Chinese)

There is, however, the La Crescenta Stake on the other side of Pasadena that has 10 wards (1 YSA ward, 1 SA ward, 1 ward in Tagalog, 1 ward in Spanish).

I don't recall seeing anything in the handbook discouraging talking about visiting apostles. I think if security was an issue, they wouldn't announce specifically that an apostle was visiting, just that someone was coming to speak.

Caleb said...

The MormonShrivel page, while occasionally useful, almost always has somewhat incorrect, or wildly incorrect information. Just look at the user a couple months ago who incorrectly reported 3 total new stakes outside the US for 2024, when the real number was much higher. Not discouraging you from using it entirely Chris, just saying maybe we shouldn't cross post their stuff here unless it seems very reputable.

Chris D. said...

James, That is ok. I realize now that I shouldn't have quoted the actual name of the visiting authority in my comment. It was indeed wrong. And as was mentioned by "Anonymous" and "Caleb", that the site mentioned doesn't have a very positive or somewhat incorrect quotes posted. So indeed I was out of place to cross reference the visiting Q12's name or even the source site for my comment. I will indeed be more careful about posting these types of comments until after the alleged meeting, for "security reasons".

As you have also clarified here that the Newsroom and Church News both post articles about their ministries. Days after their tour ending or leaving those cities in question.

I don't know how much of a security risk there is saying apostle will visit. However the Church News reports are after the fact, so that is a different issue. I seem to recall that there were pre-announcements for some of President Nelson's past travels, so clearly pre-announcing them is not the end of the world.

Elder Kearon spoke at the stake conference of the stake in Jamaica I believe last Sunday. He does not seem to have made any organizational changes.

I am trying to wait until March to create my temple list. I am inclined to put Jamaica on the list of potential temples. However I do not think in the past there has been a close correlation between apostles visiting places and them getting temples announced. Huancayo Peru I believe got its first apostolic visit, by Elder Bedmar, a while after the temple was announced.

I think Maputo had a visit a few months before the temple was announced, but there had been several apostolic visits earlier including one that including an incident of an armed robbery that could have resulted in death.

It is interesting that President Nelson did not name the city where the incident happened in the part of the talk where he talked on it, but he did in fact name the city in the talk, since it was one of the announced temple locations.

I am thinking I will wait until March to come out with my list. See if any new stakes trend towards leading to any place seeming to be an additional strong candidate.

My theory is 15 temples will be announced which will make it so 200 have been announced by President Nelson. I will probably try to come up with a top 15 list. If I get more than 5 of the temples right I will be surprised but we shall see.

Optimistically, it would be amazing if this was an indicator of wards that will be created soon. All of the chapels in the area of Milan only have one ward each, similar thing in Munich except a German ward meeting in the same building as an English ward. Not many memories of Munich, just that I got hit with some asthma-like symptoms at that leg of the journey.

The Church in Munich has been struggling for a while. By German standards it's an insanely expensive place to live, very challenging for large families to make it work. The growth in the Munich stake is in places like Ingolstadt and Augsburg, although the Munich wards baptize a lot, especially people from Iran I believe. I would not be shocked if eventually Munich got a Farsi branch.

With the new mission presidents announced today I did some number crunching. So far mission presidents have had bios published this year for mission presidents called from 16 countries. I think if we looked at place of birth we could get a higher number, but I am just going by place of residence at time of call. It is simpler to track although it misses some interesting things.

For 2000 there were 8 countries. I was going to try 1988 when I expect there were fewer, but it was too hard to get information. Even 2000 took a lot of searches.

There were 15 mission presidents called from outside the US in 2000, including 2 from Canada. Over a third of those were Brazilians. 4 called to serve as mission presidents in Brazil, and 2 as mission presidents in Portugal. One of the later was Elder Soares.

The full country list was Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Indoenisa, Australia and Tonga.

So far, only including those who have had calls published the list for this year is Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, India, Malaysia, Brazil, Guatemala, Chile., United Kingdom, Mexico, Argentina, the Phillippines, Australia and Uruguay. Brazil is only at 5, right now tied for most with Mexico, but I am not sure what the end numbers will be.

I did a study on 2024. That year there were mission presidents called from 30 countries. There were 51 total called from outside the US. The number called from in the US was 92 as opposed to 82 in 2000. The number called from Utah was 35 in 2024 and 39 in 2000. Utah still holds a clear lead, but a smaller percentage and at least that year a smaller number. So far this year Utah is at 27. Last year Brazil lead with 6, but Mexico only had 2. So Mexico is already ahead of last years numbers. It was at 1 in 2000. The Philippines which were at 0 in 2000 were at 4 last year and are at 3 so far this year.

Ghana was second last year with 4.

In US states, back in 2000 California and Idaho tied for second at 6 and Arizona at 5. There were mission presidents from 20 total states, the number was 21 last year. However Texas came in second to Utah with 10, followed by California at 9, Idaho at 8 and Arizona at 7.

So the spread of US states seems to be about even, with Utah getting a little lower percentage and other states rising.

The number of mission leaders called from Latin America is up, and also more spread out in different countries. The number called from Africa was 0 in 2000, and 10 last year (not counting the Ugandan natives who were living in Maryland when called). People residing in Europe went from 0 in 2000 to 3 in 2024. Not a super huge change, but significant. For Asia it went from 1 in 2000 (for a country that has banned outside clerics, Indonesia) to 7 (4 from the Philippines, and 1 each from India, Indonesia and Thailand).

I am surprised these are the countries (there was a Korean-born couple called from California, but that is another issue). So far this year Asia is at 4, 3 Filipinos, 1 Malaysian. 1 of the Filipino couples will lead a mission in the US.

Ghana seems to regularly send out more mission leaders than Nigeria, even though church membership is higher in Nigeria. It might be better to gather more data before noticing any major tends.

Chris D. said...

An oddity of this group, President Norman K. Mitchell, of the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission (2024-2027) has served less than a year since being called last year July 2024. And is being replaced this year July 2025 with President Darin L. Allred (2025-2028). I wonder the reason for the early release of President Mitchell. The Utah Salt Lake City South Mission was not on the original list of 2025 New Mission Presidents called.

James G. Stokes said...

Perhaps a call to the new Young Men General Presidency or as a General Authority Seventy? If that is not the case in April, it's probably something health-realted.

John Pack Lambert said...

My guess is the Salt Lake South change is most likely health related. Generally when they change due to calls as general authorities they announce the new mission president after the call.

I believe that puts us to 176 new mission presidents in this group. Last year there were only 144. Which I think explains not creating any new missions this year.

The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square just announced thry will go to Brazil in February 2026. There are no more details as of yet.

I am really hoping that September 2026 they will go to Nigeria and February 2027 they will go to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I am not sure where thry would then go in fall 2027. It would seem 1 more destination would be needed, before the tour ends with the Salt Lake Temple dedication in probably December 2027.

There have been small rumors and wishful thinking regarding consolidating our ward that were put to rest last night. Our ward is a very transient ward, we have people moving in at almost the same rate as people moving out. Our stake leadership has said the entire stake has averaged 60% for a long time (on various statistics), but with the latest count of 139 regularly attending sacrament meeting, that's only 29% of the total membership of our ward (60% would be 282 attending). Our two neighboring wards have lower attendance than ours (one officially, the other an unofficial estimate), and our ward could easily be split in half and given to each ward, since one half can drive to the chapel in our ward faster, while the other half can drive to the chapel we attend faster.

Due to the discovery of bed bugs at our chapel, we had to meet with our neighboring ward for that Sunday and they greatly appreciated the boost in numbers. Some in our ward noted that while we have a strong primary and young women's group, we have very few young men (most Sundays, we're lucky if 2 show up). Meanwhile, that neighboring ward has the opposite - tiny primary, not many young women, but lots of young men. I guess they were putting a bug in our stake president's ear at their ward council meeting about combining our wards, but when we had our ward council meeting last night, the stake president outright said there were no plans to change (specifically) our ward boundary.

On another note, that I specifically asked about - there were plans to create a Filipino branch in our stake (there's already a group), but our stake leaders were told to wait. Not sure if it's related, but apparently our new mission president is from the Philippines.

James G. Stokes said...

You may be right about the mission President in question. However, the Church has changed things in the recent past about GA Seventy and area seventy calls/releases, so I could see the Church also changing practice regarding the calls of mission presidents to general Church service.

Thies kind of empty meetinghouses possible show land that the church owns.

Some positive news - the Glennallen Branch was reinstated recently (don't have a date, but I just saw it on the map, which certainly wasn't there a month ago). This is encouraging, because the branch was consolidated in order for the Valdez Branch to upgrade into a ward. Obviously, the Church held on to the chapel in Glennallen, since the branch is meeting there. This means that Valdez has enough members to afford to have Glennallen split off.

His full name is Dunstan George Bernard Tiwayi Chadambuka which may be the longest name of a temple president (although there may be a Polynesian Temple President who beats it, I think Jonathan Napela's name was long than that, but sadly he died before the temple was completed in Laie, although his work was praised by name in the dedicatory prayer by President Grant). Brother Chadambuka was an area seventy from 2019-2024. Before that he and sister Chadambuka were the leaders of the Botswana-Namibia mission (which also included part of South Africa). In fact the mission offices may have been in Pretoria, South Africa. Prior to becoming a mission president Brother Chadambuka owner a constuction/hardware company and was a counselor in the Mutare District presidency. Mutare is now a stake. It is very near the border with Mozambique. It is just over 3 and a half hours drive from Mutare to Harare, and 5 hours drive from Mutare to Beira (of course that assumes no time to cross the border which is probably unrealistic). It is less than an hour from Mutare to Chimoio in Mozambique which has a district, but the travel calculator says that it is less than 3 hours from Chimoio to Beira and just under 4 hours from Chimoio to Harare. However if there is a branch in Manica, which would be in Zimbabwe if the border did not bend to the west at that point, they might actually be closer to the Harare Temple than the Beira Temple. At some future point a temple in Mutate might become doable to better serve Mutate, Manica, Chimoio, Nyazura and other areas. Right now though no other stake or district in Zimbabwe is closer to Mutare than to Harare, Masvingo is basically at the point where Mutate and Harare are equal distant. Masvingo is maybe 5 minutes closer to Bulawayo. However a Bulawayo Temple would take in 3 stakes in Bulawayo plus the Gweru stake, since that is basically 2 hours from Bulawayo and 3.5 hours from Harare. Eventually Mutate and Gweru will get temples, but only Bulawayo could I see being announced before at least 1 more stake is organized.

Looking at the map the mission branches in Francistown, Botswana may be assigned to the Harare Temple. Gaborone however is way closer to Johannesburg, so unless the cost/time to get approved/time to cross the border combined value of the time/money cost to do this is very, very much lower to go to Harare than Johannesburg, I think Gaborone will stay with Johannesburg Temple.

The only other new temple whose president and matron are listed, who have not had their bios published yet are for Davao Philippines. That is Edgar and Jocelyn Cabera. They live in Tagum Phillipines, at least they did in 2021 when he was called as a counselor in the presidency of the newly formed Tagum Philippines Stake. He worked as a supervising agriculturalists. President Cabrera is about 65, while President Chadambuka is about 54. That is believe is fairly young for a temple president, they are normally in their 60s sometimes in their 70s when called, although since they stopped listing temple president age with their bios a few years back it takes more effort to know for sure.

Ted H. Ong, the new president of the Oakland California Temple is I believe Ted Hop Ong who was president of the Hong Kong Mission from 2003-2006. If so he is about 72. The name Ted Ong is somewhat common, and that Ted Ong lived in Carlsbad, which is in north San Diego County, so it would seem odd to call him as president of the Oakland Temple. Occasionally temple presidents are called out of district, but more likely is that at some point in the almost 20 years since he ended his term as mission president he moved. It is either a different person, he remarried, or their is some confusion on exactly what his wife's name is. Because of what the confusion is, I suspect it is the last of the three. In 2003 his wife's name was given as Wai-Mui Amelia Yeung in 2025 it is given as Wai-Ching Yueng Ong, this is a bit more inconsistent than Elder James Robinson, an area authority from Florida having his wife's name sometimes given as Leteshia and sometimes as LeTeshia (Elder Robinson is white, his wife is African-American, as far as I know he is the only non-African American area seventy with an African-American wife, but he was an area seventy for 19 months before I realized that, so I am not sure there is no other such case), but I suspect that Wai-Mui Amelia Yeung and Wai-Ching Yueng are the same person. It will be more clear when the full biography is published for them on their call as temple leaders. 2003 is also an odd year in that it seems that year they decided not to tell us where nearly called mission presidents served their missions. Almost every year before and since they have done so (I am not sure if 2003 is the only year where they neglected this detail).

The Tabernacle Choir has performed their first concert in Peru. Here is the Church News article. https://www.thechurchnews.com/living-faith/2025/02/21/tabernacle-choir-orchestra-peru-tour-elder-soares-interfaith-concert/ Elder Soares was at the concert and spoke before hand. Earlier in the day he spoke at an inter-faith meeting in Lima. The announcers for the concert were the area communications director for the South America Northeast Area and his wife both of whom have been involved in broadcasting. While the concert is in Peru they are also trying to draw in cultural elements and participants with links to Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia.

Richard DeVries, the new president of the Chicago Illinois Temple (replacing President Ward who is Dallin H. Oaks son-in-law) used to be my stake president. That was when I lived in the Ann Arbor Stake. I believe the DeVries live in St. Joseph, Michigan, where he was born which although it is in the Kalamazoo Michigan Stake is assigned to the Chicago Temple district. I might be wrong on where they live, they might have moved recently. St. Joseph, Michigan will almost certainly be assigned to the Grand Rapids Temple when that temple is completed. Even on Sunday morning when traffic is minimal it takes way less time to get to the Grabd Rapids Temple location than the Chicago Temple location. On a weeknight it is a much worse situation.

Meetinghouse Locator on the Church's website now indicates a branch in Ciutadella, Spain, on the western end of the Balearic island of Menorca. It is labeled "Menorca Branch,' the same as the branch in Mahón on the eastern end. However, I suspect that the names will soon be changed to Ciutadella Branch and Mahón Branch, respectively.

I watched the concert at the National Stadium in Lima with the Tabernacle Choir last night. That is the largest live audience the Tabernacle Choir has ever had for a full concert. 30,000 as opposed to 21,000 in the Conference Center. None of their tour locations have exceeded 20,000 before which was the size of the venue they performed at in Lima. The Nationsl Auditorium in Mexico only holds 10 000, which is why they did concerts there 2 nights in a row.

The concert not only had guests artists with kinks to Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, but they video ed in and talked to watch parties in the other 3 countries.

The opening remarks were given by Elder Ulisses Soares. Alex Makecio, who is one of the narrators for the Spanish version of Music and the Spoken Word was the narrator for the program, assisted by a Tabernacle Choir member who I think is from.Ecuador. Brother Malecio's wife's mother is from Peru.

Thry mentioned that this concert and tour was part of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the dedication of South America for the preaching of the gospel.so will be concerts in Buenas Aires in August, the first time the choir will ever go to Argentina. Then there will be a concert in Sao Paulo in February 2025 also part of this celebration. The choir did go to Brazil in 1981.

I just realized that President Mayamba, who is a stake president in Kinshasa (I was lead to this because he became president of a nee stake) is part of the DR Congo national Parliament. Here https://news-africa.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/herm-egrave-s-itina-mayamba--church-member-and-stake-president--is-elected-member-of-parliament-in-dr-congo is an article that makes this clear. I wish thry would stop saying stakes are like dioceses. Stakes are not like dioceses, at least not Catholic dioceses. In the US stakes are the equivalent of large, multi-site Cathliic parishes. Areas are like dioceses. They have a roughly equivalent number of members (some diocese like areas are smaller than other, the biggest ones have more Cathlics in their boundaries than the Utah area has members). Also like areas, the leaders of dioceses are seen as the church wide guardians of doctrine. There is a little difference because bishop's in the Cathloc Church are such as bishop's, but not all bishop's run dioceses, some other men are designated bishop's with other duties. General authorities are designated that first, and area president is just one of a range of assignments area presidents have. Some dioceses have as many parishes as areas have stakes. Dioceses al.ost always exceed 50 parishes, and some parishes have over 10,000 Cathlics. Many parishes are bigger than most if not all stakes by me.bership. No stake in probably over 70 years has exceeded 20 units, Very few dioceses have under 50 parishes. Saying thry are similar confuses and misleads more than informs. I understand the ifmdea that a parish or a ward is the oocal unit, the next up is stake or diocese, however it does not work when you have multi-building parishes, units like diabetes between the parishes and the dioceses. And dioceses averaging 100 times or more the mbership of a stake.
