Costa Rica
Two Sundays ago, the Church organized its sixth stake in Costa Rica. The Heredia Costa Rica Stake was organized from the Alajuela Costa Rica Stake and includes the following five wards and two branches: The Belen, Flores, Heredia, Ojo de Agua, and San Francisco Wards and the San Rafael and Santo Domingo Branches. As part of the new stake creation, the nearby Naranjo Costa Rica District was consolidated with the Alajuela Costa Rica Stake and two branches in the former district were upgraded to ward status. There are now six stakes and four districts in Costa Rica
Utah
The Church organized a new stake in Utah last Sunday. The Orem Utah Vineyard Stake was organized from the Orem Utah Sunset Heights Stake and includes the following seven wards and one branch: The Vineyard 1st, Vineyard 2nd, Vineyard 3rd (Spanish), Vineyard 4th, Vineyard 5th. Vineyard 6th and Vineyard 7th Wards and the Geneva Branch (Care Center). There are now 564 stakes and one district in Utah.

The Kaliti Branch, Addis Ababa Ethiopia District, Uganda Kampala Mission, was created on 16 June. There are now 6 branches in the district:
Awasa Branch
Bekulobet Branch
Debre Zeit Branch
Kaliti Branch
Megenagna Branch
Wendo Genet Branch
So there are no reports on the seventh stake. Then no stake?

The Liberia District becoming a Stake is my 95% certain guess. I don't see the math work out for anything else, unless two smaller Districts are consolidated.
Matt,
Is there a case study done on how guided tours of meetinghouses affect the mission baptisms and rentention. Also how about proselyting via social media by missionaries. Since this will become the new norm do you have any stats on this in the missions that were pilot programs.
My nephew has been back from his mission for a year maybe two. He was part of a pioneer effort for online social media proselytizing.
We recent had a sister missionary return home to our ward from the Temple Square mission where using social media was an important part of her mission.
As for missionaries spending time at chapels to be available for tours, I wonder if this would work better in urban areas where people might be continually walking in front of a building, than in a suburban or rural area.
If this works, I wonder if we will see meeting houses built with attached or adjacent missionary apartments.
This strikes me as being somewhat analogous to some other churches which have full time employees (priests, ministers, pastors) who live at or near their church buildings and spend most of their time there. As a result, their buildings are open most of the time (except in the middle of the night), where people can come in just about any time they wish. This may be our attempt to mirror that availability.
I know back in the day in some places small branches would meet at the missionary apartments.
Here http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865582147/Online-missionaries-LDS-meetinghouse-tours-Been-there-done-that.html is a Deseret News article with a horrible title that addresses some of these issues. WEhat they describe is more intentionally taking investigators through a tour of the Church, then having people show up.
I know when I was in the Ann Arbor area we would occasionally have people show up out of the blue at the institute building wanting to learn more about the Church.
My experience being at Family History Centers during the day is that people show up who want to contact the Church and not just learn about family history. These people are mainly looking for physical assistance though, often monetary assistance, of a kind missionaries could not provide.
This surfaced tonight, although it's been up for a bit. Lee Donaldson works in the missionary department, and said a load of things in this about 50 minute presentation.

The missionaries in my stake officially transfer from the Washington DC South Mission to the Virginia Richmond Mission on Thursday.
Good job, Mike Johnson! Lots of good information here.
Some notes on current missions newly broken down:
The Gilbert Arizona Mission will cover stakes in only three cities!? I imagine that some of those stakes may cover smaller towns outside of Gilbert, Mesa, and Queens Creek, but that is an amazingly concentrated mission. I hope that the missionaries who serve there strengthened by such strong numbers of membership. I felt that in Chile way back in the early 90s since there were so many members in comparison to my native US midwest.
The renewed Santiago South Chile Mission will be quite concentrated. I wondder if the mission offices will be decentralized or not, away from the other Santiago mission offices. I liked how they created the Rancagua Mission from the old South mission.
The new Rancho Cucamonga Mission will cover a lot of the high desert and only a smaller chunk of the Inland Empire.
The restored Cinncinnati Mission will have two stakes pretty far up north in Indiana. I hope some towns in my native Hoosier state that have never had a missionary presence will get more soon.
All these changes are pretty interesting and if the scriptures have anything to say about it, it is quite revealing.
OK Scottsdale's shape just looks crazy
a couple of things I noticed:
Because Tri- City washington lost Vancouver it stole several stakes from the Spokane mission which was a large mission.
Denver North and South could be now Called East and West.
Thanks Mike. You contributed a huge amount of data. My son will serve in the Brazil Natal Mission in September. Thanks to technology, I will be able to see the city in which he serves, locate the meetinghouse within that city and possibly read his blog or Facebook page. Things have change a great deal since the last century in which I served my mission!

Arizona Scottsdale: Rough west boundary is the SR-51 freeway, although for the most part the stake runs from the Airport up to Squaw (Piestewa) Peak. Payson Arizona is 100 m iles from Flagstaff, so the other places are all east of that.
Missionaries may have to pass through Gilbert Arizona Mission to get to areas in the White Mountains/Northeastern Arizona named. Three stakes in Mesa, all along the Red Mountain Freeway.
Santos Brazil took a mission district from Sao Paulo East, as well as those named that are from Sao Paulo South, the Sao Sebastiao District (includes branches in Maresias, Ubatuba, and Microregion of Caraguatatuba, along with Ilhabela (an island just across from where BR-101 makes the turn north towards Sao Sebastiao).
Fond a probable missing stake from the list for Gilbert Arizona. Gilbert Williams Field Stake, I've also heard the mission home may be within the boundaries of that one.
Williams Field was the old US Air Force Base there. It's now known as Phoenix Gateway Airport, and a new freeway that will help people access has had its first segment built recently.
The Gilbert Williams Field Stake is still listed in CDOL as covered by the Arizona Tempe Mission.
The primary route from the greater Phoenix area to Payson, Snowflake, and Eagar (the three I tried) goes through highway 87, according to Google Maps. This route is entirely inside the new Arizona Scottsdale Mission. Note, these stakes used to be in the Arizona Tempe Mission and it makes a lot more since now that there is a Scottsdale Mission.
There is no need for missionaries traveling between Scottsdale and the stakes of northeast Arizona inside that mission to actually go into another mission.
BTW, the Scottsdale and Gilbert missions are not adjacent to each other--they don't have a common boundary.
Given interest in the Arizona missions, I thought I would post what stakes are covered by which mission for all of the missions:

The Arizona Gilbert Mission office is at 1001 N Burk St, Gilbert, AZ, which is inside the boundaries of the Lindsay Ward, Gilbert Arizona Val Verde Stake. This is about 7 and a half miles north (and a little west) of the Gilbert Arizona Temple, which should be dedicated by the end of the year.
Ohio Cincinnati Mission includes almost the entire eastern strip of Indiana (the two easternmost strips of counties—perhaps covering a 3rd county in some places), except for the very southern part of the border with Ohio, where the Kentucky Louisville Mission still covers what appears to approximate Switzerland and Jefferson counties. Note, the Cincinnati Ohio Stake includes the Batesville Ward and the Lawrenceburg Branch, both in Indiana. The Muncie Indiana Stake extends north from the Batesville Ward and the Fort Wayne Indiana Stake north from there.
Some of the stakes previously covered by the Utah Ogden Mission (e.g., Soda Springs, Paris, Montpelier, Montpelier South in Idaho, and the Afton and Thayne stakes in Wyoming) have been transferred to the Idaho Pocatello Mission. The Franklin, Preston North, Preston South, and Malad stakes in Idaho remain in the Utah Ogden Mission.
I computed the distance using google maps from the mission office to the temple in each of the Arizona missions.
Arizona Gilbert Mission is 7.5 mi – about 15 mins to Gilbert Arizona Temple
Arizona Mesa Mission is 6.6 mi – about 15 mins to Mesa Arizona Temple
Arizona Phoenix Mission is 6.6 mi – about 11 mins to Phoenix Arizona Temple
Arizona Scottsdale Mission is 164 mi – about 2 hours 53 mins to Snowflake Arizona Temple
Arizona Tempe Mission (no temple in mission)
Arizona Tucson Mission is 3.3 mi – about 9 mins to Tucson Arizona Temple
Arizona Tucson Mission is 145 mi – about 2 hours 24 mins to Gila Valley Arizona Temple
Arizona is doing very well with church growth, it seems, as evidenced by the increase of missions and new temples. When I was a student in the Provo MTC back in the winter of 1989-90, 3 of our ten Spanish speaking bound class students were from the Grand Canyon State. Two from Mesa, one from Phoenix. (His dad was a stake president, I think, but not sure if a suburb, last name Patten, or Patton).
How many units outside of the state boundaries attend Arizona temples? I think there is at least one in western New Mexico, plus perhaps some in southern Utah. Maybe the Las Vegas and Redlands temples cover all the other wards and branches to the west of Arizona.
Despite the new temples and missions in Idaho, perhaps Arizona will become the second biggest growth state for new church members? I think Utah still leads by sheer numbers. California has not grown as fast as I would have hoped, but as a nation the Church seems quite robust.
Virginia has been going around the 100,000 mark, and the increase of a new mission and new missionaries will have its effects there.
With more numbers, more accidents are bound to happen to the elders and sisters, like the Utah Elder shot in the Hampton Roads area few years ago. With more sisters serving, there will also be more of them going to more dangerous places. Trios might be more common, which could facilitate more splits and regular member activity in proselyting (proselityzing to the regular world). Having said that increased risks are expected with higher numbers, like the Utah elder recently electrocuted in Guatemala, it is statistically proven youth of the same age/cohort are safer on missions than living as a regular member or less active one. The sister who passed away this past year (I forget now where, maybe Oklahoma) left a big impression on those around here.
Great times to be missionary. Shout out to my nephew in Africa: he is having a wild ride and I love his letters via email and blog. In the country where my parents served in the Peace Corps before being baptized by elders knocking doors in Indiana.
Just learned that on stake boundaries, Gilbert Williams Field, if in the Tempe Arizona Mission, is completely surrounded by other stakes in the Gilbert Arizona Mission.
I think in the end it will be found to have been one someone missed when sorting out what stakes went where.
% wise Texas is one of the fastest growing states. Adds about 10,000 members a year or about 3-4% growth over the past decade.
The CDOL map for Gilbert mission doesn't have a hole in it.
Thanks. Although CDOL shows the Gilbert Arizona Williams Field Stake as in the Arizona Tempe Mission, LDS Maps does show it covered by the Arizona Gilbert Mission.
Thanks for catching that.
How many branches do they have in the district in Angola? Is the Angola mission a normal sized mission, or does it not have a full contingent of missionaries yet?
Well, it looks like they changed the name of the Botswana Mission. Did they leave the same boundaries between the Cape Town and Johannesburg Missions?
Looking at the new maps, it looks like some of what had been in the Salt Lake City mission was moved to the Fort Collins Mission. However it almost looks like it was just part of a stake. Am I right that is what happened?
It seems odd that the Cheyenne Wyoming East stake is not in the new Fort Collins Mission.
The Nampa Mission looks to be totally from the old Boise Mission, with no units from any other mission. I guess this is not too surprising. By area it is about half Idaho, half Oregon, but membership and population wise I am guessing more in Idaho.
The Illinois Chicago West Mission includes none of Chicago proper as I expected. This is like how the Washington DC South Mission includes none of Washington DC. It is also not just a split of the Chicago Mission, since it now takes in the Peoria Stake, which had been in the Des Moines Mission, although it was just a few years ago they disbanded the Peoria Mission.
The Wichita Mission took one stake from the Colorado Springs Mission which represents about a third of its area. There are still two Kansas stakes in the Kansas City Mission, and south-west Kansas is in the Tulsa Mission, which is one I would not be surprised if it splits next year.
It looks like the new Mexico Ciudad Juarez Mission has 2 temples in its boundaries, leaving the Chihuahua Mission with no temples. I guess actually looking at a map this should not surprise me.
I am surprised Guaymas did not end up in the Ciudad Obregon mission, having been between those two cities and finding them fairly close. I guess though it is about halfway between Ciudad Obregon and Hermosillo, and it looks like the Ciudad Obregon mission primarily faces south.
It is interesting that there is a stake in Nuevo Laredo but only a district in Laredo.
What is going on with the Ohio Cincinnati Mission only taking in one of the Dayton Stakes. I am also surprised that it takes in the Fort Wayne Indiana Stake, although considering I knew that the Indianapolis Mission had more stakes than any of the surrounding mission, I should not be surprised. It had twice as many stakes as we had here in the Detroit Mission. It makes this a very different orientation than the old Cincinnati Mission, which took in more of Kentucky. Although actually I think it was only by having the Huntington West Virginia Stake.
The boundary between the Salt Lake and Salt Lake East Missions runs right down Main Street in Salt Lake, for 3 blocks south of the Temple. Temple Square, The Conference Center and the block east of Temple Square are evidently all defined as officially within the boundaries on the Temple Square Mission. The Lucero Ward seems to run along about the same lines as Salt Lake portion of the new Salt Lake East Mission, with the exception of the area in the Granite stake.
At an even 50 stakes the Salt Lake East mission is huge. Still with over 564 stakes in Utah, and 8 missions, with 6 of the Salt Lake East Mission's stakes in Wyoming, it still has a below average number of stakes for a Utah mission. The Provo Mission has over 200 stakes before it was split. The Salt Lake East Mission is the mission that takes in where Elder Nelson's parents lived when he asked for the bishop to send people to teach the gospel to them.
It looks like all stakes with Portland in their name will now be in the Washington Vancover Mission. I am thinking some of the old Spokane Mission got moved to the Kennewick Mission. Does anyone know if I am right.
Actually, Scottsdale is a fairly normal shape. A crazy shape in Rancho Cucamunga with the finger in the area around that city, and then the almost disconnected high desert part.
Then there is Salt Lake City, which is non-contiguous, unless you go through the Salt Lake. That was actually the case before, and the new mission no longer has another bottleneck before going to Wyoming, and with the East Mission taking Park City and Kamas from the South Mission, it does not really bottle neck at all. With Park City and the close environs of the UofU it probably ends up the mission in Utah with the most people hostile to the Church.
The map of the Gilbert Arizona Mission shows it going way out to Florence. I almost wonder if there is another stake out in the southern end of the mission missed from the list.
Spokane Mission is probably by area more in Idaho and Montana than in Washington now. It also only touches Kennewick of the other Washington Missions, and has no shared boundaries with the 5 western Washington Missions. Kennewick will probably have a lot of Spanish speaking missionaries since it has central Washington's havily Hispanic agricultural belt.
It looks to me like the mission with the least Church organization in its boundaries is the Forteleza East Mission. While I guess Lviv lacks a district, it still looks like Forteleza is almost starting from scratch.
I also found it interesting that the two stakes in Papua New Guines both remain in the Port Moresby Mission.
Interesting that there are more Idaho than Washington stakes in the new Spokane Mission, although the two Moscow stakes are probably only about half Idaho.
The Kennewick Mission is by far the largest by number of stakes. I guess this should not surprise me since they have release time seminary in the Tri-cities. There are enough Mormons there that people complain that they do Mormon proms because they don't like the atmosphere at regular proms. In Michigan and California even when noticed people don't complain, because there are not enough Mormons for it to feel like an attempt to divide and exclude.
So Mesa Arizona stakes are split between 4 mission? Is it just me, or does the Phoenix Mission have a lot more people in its boundaries than the other 4 metro Phoenix missions? Although I guess with the Phoenix Stake itself in the Tempe Mission, maybe the Phoenix Mission does not go as far south or east as I am thining.
My guess is the part of Arizona assigned to the St. George Mission goes to the St. George Temple. I am not sure what Temple the Mesquite Nevada Stake (which includes Littlefield, Arizona) is assigned to, but my guess is St. George. I know Kingman and Lake Havasu City Stakes are assigned to the LAs Vegas Temple. I am not sure where Yuma is assigned.
With a temple in Monticello, Utah, some of nother Arizona might be assigned there. Western New Mexico is mainly assigned to Arizona Temples. For a long time the Tucson Mission included El Paso, Texas, but that is now in the Albaquerque Mission.
A big chunck of north-east Arizona is in the Farmington New Mexico Mission.
The Lima Perú Santa Patricia Stake was created on 30 June. There are 7 wards in the stake:
Chacarilla Ward
La Molina Vieja Ward
Mayorazgo Ward
Monterrico Ward
San Borja Ward
Santa Felicia Ward
Santa Patricia Ward
The Amador Ward, Henderson Nevada Anthem Stake, was created on 30 June. There are now 10 wards in the stake:
Amador Ward
Anthem Ward
Arroyo Grande Ward
Carnegie Ward
Desert Valley Ward
Horizon Ridge Ward
Inspirada Ward
Paseo Verde Ward
Seven Hills Ward
Summit Ward
There are 5 branches in the Luanda Angola District and 2 more in the mission. I doubt this mission will be large.
The Nampa and Twin Falls mission are only from the old Boise Mission.
5 branches in the Laredo District, 5 wards and a branch in the Nuevo Laredo Stake. I was going to suggest that it might be the 3000-member required for a US (or Canadian) Stake and a 1900-member requirement for the rest of the world. But ARDA states that Webb County (Laredo is the seat) had 3436 LDS members in 2010 in the then 4 congregations.
I had wondered about this one as to whether both Dayton Stakes would go in the new mission. The Dayton East Stake does make more sense in the Columbus Mission.
Pretty much the entire eastern strip of Indiana is in the Cincinnati Mission, including the Batesville Ward and a branch in the Cincinnati Stake.
Yes, the Temple Square Mission covers all 35 acres of the Temple Square complex.
Yes, a couple of stakes from Spokane was moved to the Kennewick Mission.
Florence Arizona is the home of a ward and two branches at corrections facilities—there is a 2nd Florence ward, but it is much closer to the Queen Creek area and meets with Queen Creek wards.
The Mesquite Nevada (and the Page Arizona) stakes are in the St. George Temple district.
I thought the New Mexico Farmington Mission was originally the Arizona Holbrok Mission, with the headquarters moved some years ago.
Page, Tuba city, Flagstaff, and Chinle were detached from the Phoenix mission when the Farmington mission was created three yrs ago the other stakes in that mission came from Mesa and Albuquerque I imagine only like 10 years ago there was just the Tucson and Phoenix missions in Arizona
"I thought the New Mexico Farmington Mission was originally the Arizona Holbrok Mission, with the headquarters moved some years ago."
Sometime in the 1980s, the Holbrook and Tempe mission boundaries were realigned to become the Phoenix and Tempe missions.
Pocatello Mission did lose to stakes, with a total of 4 missionaries serving in them to Twin Falls. Also, Burley Idaho had been in Pocatello Mission before they built the Twin Falls Temple, and put that whole new Temple District in the Boise Mission.
The Gateway Ward, Rock Springs Wyoming Stake, was created on 30 June. There are now 9 wards and 2 branches in the stake:

Foothill Ward
Fremont Peak Ward
Gateway Ward
Overland Ward
Pilot Butte Ward
Rock Springs Ward
Temple Peak Ward
White Mountain Ward
Farson Branch
Rock Springs College Branch (Student)
The Kuna 15th Ward, Kuna Idaho East Stake, was created on 1 July. There are now 9 wards in the stake:
Kuna 1st Ward
Kuna 3rd Ward
Kuna 7th Ward
Kuna 10th Ward
Kuna 11th Ward
Kuna 12th Ward
Kuna 13th Ward
Kuna 15th Ward
Kuna YSA Ward
The Lagos Branch, Algarve Portugal District, Portugal Lisbon Mission, was created on 30 June. There are now 7 branches in the district:
Beja Branch
Faro Branch
Lagos Branch
Loulé Branch
Olhão Branch
Portimão Branch
Tavira Branch
The Bonoua Branch, Port-Bouet Cote d'Ivoire Stake, was created on 30 June. There are now 7 wards and 3 branches in the stake:
Adjouffou Ward
Jean-Folly Ward
Koumassi Ward
Marcory Ward
Port-Bouet Ward
Remblais Ward
Vridi Ward
Bonoua Branch
Grand-Bassam 1st Branch
Grand-Bassam 2nd Branch
The Formoso and Remanso Branches, Brazil Manaus Mission, were created on 30 June. There are now 8 branches in the mission:
Boa Vista Brazil District
Itacoatiara Brazil District
Brazil Manaus Mission Branch
Cruzeiro do Sul Branch
Formoso Branch
Ji-Paraná Branch
Remanso Branch
Tefé Branch
Vilhena 1st Branch
Vilhena 3rd Branch
The Mankessim 2nd Branch, Ghana Cape Coast Mission, was created on 30 June. There are now 10 branches in the mission:
Swedru Ghana District
Abakrampa Branch
Agona Nkwanta Branch
Axim Branch
Daboase Branch
Ghana Cape Coast Mission Branch
Kissi Branch
Mankessim 1st Branch
Mankessim 2nd Branch
Nkroful Branch
Tarkwa Branch
Is it likely they will form another district in the Manaus Mission soon, that seems to be a lot of branches to have directly under the mission.
Actually, three of those branches (Ji-Paraná, Vilhena 1st, and Vilhena 3rd) have now been transferred to the Brazil Cuiabá Mission.
CDOL still has the Ji-Paraná, Vilhena 1st, and Vilhena 3rd branches in the Manaus Mission, but LDS Maps has them in the Brazil Cuiabá Mission.
They are long way away from any other unit in the Cuiabá Mission, but are next to a stake that is covered by the Manaus Mission. I wonder where they would get better support.
The Mesa Mission by area (although not b population), is probably at least 75% in the Globe Arizona Stake, with the San Carlos branch probably taking up 40% of the mission area alone.
Also, looking at the map, the way the Tuba City Arizona Stake and the Page Arizona Stake snake around each other seems a bit odd, I was surprised to see any of Tuba City stake in Utah at all.
Good post. We've posted a similar Liberia Costa rica profile here: http://traveleam.ca/liberia-costa-rica
